And no because no :)
There's canned "salmon" you can use to make fish tacos though.
I agree it would be not only cool but realistic too. Obviously after a Apocalypse of any kind survivors would use any means possible to find food and a fishing pole is a darn sight easier to make than some of the stuff in this game!
Speaking of realism, water animals should be, normally, the last ones to have a common virus with humans. Even if dogs and bears can have the same zombie virus as humans, fish should not. So it would be, for me, the most secured way to have food, besides grabbing fruits on trees. Though I'm not specialized in fish species, I could be wrong.
Have to wonder if they just ignored the water life since the water itself is so hinky in the game engine at the moment. Pretty sure I saw mention that the water system is on the list of things to be addressed moving into A20 or A21. Maybe we'll get some water-based resources like fish at some point in that process?
For the last sentence, for sure. They need to make it so the player can fear fishes and they flee, or can only fish one or two then it will dry the fishing space and needs time to regenerate. A fishing mechanic ala Don't Starve would also be cool : you need, each fish caught, more time to catch the next one, up to a limit, but it will always be unbalanced between solo and multi. Unless they factor the time over the number of players in the server.
While this would still let people build their own fishing area, they wouldn't be able to do it just by making some mini pool of water inside one of the buildings of their base, or even underground. You want easy to access private fishing? You got to put in a load of work to make it, to the point it may just be easier to build a base next to an already existing river or lake.
I'd also like to see the option of fish traps. Stick it in the water and make a note of coming and collecting anything that collects in it over time. Amount collected would likely be fairly small, so if you want lots you need to build lots like with how farming has always worked, but also upgradeable with perks like anything else (probably stick it in with The Huntsman perk).
I'd guess that such traps would also need to be in a minimum of water of a certain width, length and depth just like fishing itself. They'd also likely need to be in a minimum depth to be placed in the first place, so no putting them on the easy to access shallow shore.
You may be talking of Minecraft fishing cooking automatic redstone machine :D that one was pure cheat in those days... while it needed a weight on your mouse button, you were able to fish 5718418 fishes a day, just because of the automatism. That said, that would be possible even without what you discribed, in 7 Days, simply because of the animation delays. I think your idea could be a good idea also.
There are 2 fishing mods I'm aware of:
MeanClouds__Fishing (which I am the current maintainer): https://github.com/doughphunghus/MeanCloud_7DtD
The fishing is a little weird, as you have to stand in the water, click on tht water with a fishing rod in hand )selected in your toolbelt), then click on land to place a "gore block" that you search like a container for whatever you caught. Its more like "casting a net" than fishing, as you don't always get fish.
Telrics Fishing: https://community.7daystodie.com/topic/19976-telrics-a19-modlets-new-mod-added-02282021/?tab=comments#comment-372482
I have not played this, but you can probably find videos on it. It looks more like "fishing", in terms of casting, from a screenshot I saw.
Seems like a little tweak to the snare trap coding and you could have a fish trap. It would, of course, require adding a "fish" food item similar to the raw meat, and a little extra coding to verify that the trap is placed in water. But some of that core trap code could likely be repurposed for this new item.
Now fishing with a pole, that's another matter. Just occurred to me that the trap idea might be feasible, though.
Weird thing is, I just saw that you were actually the maintainer of this mod in 7 Days off site/forum. What a coincidence. I also saw Telric's fishing mod which seems cool.
not sure what the differences are when actually catching fish. like odds of a fish being caught. MeanCloud made his so you have to place and search the "stuff you caught", which is really just a container with odds on finding fish, shrimp, boots, etc. Its less "realistic" but fun in its own right. MeanCloud also has fish traps you leave by the water. I've seen some other "fishing" traps in a game (you put a rebar block in the water) but its was a long time ago and I'm not sure but it may have been Darkness Falls or War of the Walkers mod.
Anyway, enjoy!
