Save all your items and sell EVERYTHING to get the crucible it will show up in the trader you will only need 12.5k to buy it with sugar butts. Dont waste time beating into safes and chests. Dont waste time looting houses, Do jobs + get the main stash if its easy, If its just a fetch Dont loot just get the item and get another job.
The quest rewards are not great but you can get magazines fast this way. Dont read any magazines that are not forge ahead, vehicles, armoured up, medicine or your melee weapon. Save the rest in a chest to read once you have the work bench + motorbike.
Put all your points into Lockpicking (dumb, but keep reading) and you go farm the ♥♥♥♥ out of Forge Ahead books - then go learn them all. Once you go past 15 Forge Ahead books "lockpicking" stops adding a bonus.
Why is this a preferred method? Advanced Engineering increases the odds of finding FOUR books, hence never greater than a 25% chance to find a "Forged Ahead" with the perk.
