But most people will say Alpha 16 is the sweet spot
That said, A16 is the last version that still has a true sandbox feel in my memory, with more potential on freeform and emergent gameplay. Runs felt more distinct from each other since the progression was way less linear. Later alphas seemed to abandon this foundation for a more linear and easier to develop version of the game.
I would play 1.0 without a doubt.
A14 is also one of the best alphas and it's pretty stable to play.
At both alphas you will experience a different way of progression for our char, you will have much more freedom than in any actual version of the game (progression, you will know the removed plains biome, build a base wherever you want and how you want, etc) You will see much interesting rewards from loot and some surprises that made that loot fun even if sometimes unbalanced as it will break steps on your progression (like finding a high level item so you will forget about crafting that item during a lot of time) You will also be able to try a better trap system, more flexible and useful (and craftable) since the beginning of the game.
You will also see that survival feels betterand will be more immersive and fit to the theme, as you will have to survive with a bow (get a crossbow as soon as you can) and a melee weapons during a good amount of time. That feeling of being "poor" and trying to survive with wood traps, a bow and a simple club is being lost on actual versions, so if you play these older aplphas forget finding and using lots of guns since the very first day.
You will find clunky things (not just technically, for instance you will be cold or hot many times and balancing that at the start will be impossible) but you can find those clunky moments also at "1.0" so nothing special that you can't see right now at the last version, even if in general, technically the actual version is better, ofc. Also, graphics will be worse, but not so much worse and imho good and fun gameplay with lots of survival freedom>better graphics, always.
As others said, A16 is also a good and well-remembered alpha, but it changed the old game so much with sleepers, making the outside world almost empty. Also, it started to nerf survival, building and freedom more than previous versions, and that imo weights a lot for what is a really good alpha, but the begin of a different game from what it was since the first version of it (because sleepers, from thinking about a town full of wandering zombies you had to clear to loot its buildings to a dead town with zombies basically only inside every POI waiting to spawn when you enter)
Finally, a last suggestion will be to try every alpha in order, at least 1 or 2 hours each one and see for yourself the progression of this game. All have something special, all are fun, and imho all are worth to be played at least 1 time. BTW, the first ones will miss random worlds, you will have to play on Navezgane.
Personally I prefer 1.0, the nerfs to traders were warranted, searching for water and food makes the early game intense especially if playing in a larger group where rationing can be a real issue. New zombie variance is a welcome change and despite the clothing system being set back again, likely to compensate for the updated player avatars, the new armour system is fun.
I will state I enjoy the magazine system, LBD was too easy to exploit the hell out of and now we can actually craft tier 6 gear it feels fully implemented as it keeps crafting a worthwhile part of the game, that really it never was before come end game.
