wood shape is already upgraded
frame shape you need to upgrade once more to get the wood block

You also can pick the frame shape back up. Wood frame you cannot.

Same applies with the stone, concrete and steel shapes as they are already upgraded blocks (but unlike the frame shape, cannot be picked up).
Its faster to use the already created material shapes when building but you both lose the upgrade XP you would get AND woe is you if you make a mistake (esp with a steel shape)

you can use the premade shapes if you want to gimp your XP, and/or, lower the time it takes to build structures. Aside from that I find it more beneficial to upgrade frames.

I use them on the top sided of my base. roof and then the frame, you can see through and fire through them at the Zeds hitting your door/walls. Leave a space between those to get your cocktails/bombs to fall down.

The Frame shape is SUPPOSED to be for previewing all the various shapes. You can pick it up and move it about before upgrading it.

HOWEVER.

Frame shapes are actually for NERD POLES which are your best resource for exploring and building. Say you have a courtyard full of spike traps? Use the Frame shape `Pole Plate` to build a temporary bridge over them to your door, then pick them up when you lock yourself in for the night.

See a tall building? Nerd pole up the side, make a platform by a window and upgrade it, smash the window and attract all the zombies, dispatch them at your leisure and then clear the floor in peace and quiet :)

Using different methods you can run rings around the AI and make life much easier than charging in the front door.

thanks for the answers !
Also, i was in a house yesterday and i tried to patch the door with 2 blocks.
I wasnt able to place 2 blocks instead of the door. Its like i wasnt aligned with the game's buildings.
Is that on purpose ? Can I not upgrade an already existing building ?

You absolutely can upgrade existing buildings.

for your specific problem with the door, a lot of poi doors have a door frame around them that you have to also destroy before you can place blocks or another door in the empty space left when you destroy the existing door.
