Is there any point in digging down?
Do you find anything except for stone? I've dug a while under my base but nothing but stone

yes in 1.0 you can find all resources underground, in one of my bases I hit coal, in another iron, in another stone, at least for now.

Most veins start on surface level. Look for iron, nitrate, coal etc on the ground like rocks. Dig down from there instead.

Tons of veins underground, that's all I do is dig down inside my bases.

Yes, I should have said 'An easier way to find it.' You can see surface veins on your map.

A lot of the veins are kinda vertical (like a cone but plenty of randomness, their peak is at the surface node), so if you want to find a vein randomly, then a horizontal or diagonal mine shaft is the way to go. I usually find a random vein within 100m (I go down to the low clay layer and dig 25m in 4 directions, pretty rare to find nothing).

I decided to dig under my base at night because i had nothing better to do while crafting so i was wondering if i'm just wasting time. I'm not digging directly down, i went down a few meters then descended sideways and building a big circular section but found nothing

Not a waste of time, actually a good use of night hours! What I do is build a staircase down to bedrock and then make a strip mine hallway going forward. This can lead me far enough from my base that my house is no longer spawned and zombies can't attack it when they are angry about the forge. Along the way, I usually find at least one ore that I start digging at. When you find any ore, that's when you start digging around it to find large amounts that can keep you busy for days in-game.
