I feel like before you did only a couple quests to unlock tier 2,
Now we have done 32 quests, give or take, and still on tier 1
2) Loot all forges and mixers; as they guarantee a Forge Ahead magazine. The other workstations also do have a chance to drop magazines as well.
3) Get lucky and check the trader(s) stock.
4) Get lucky with mailboxes and other looted containers.
If I get a pot while looting great, but I rush the forge every single time. (Note: A pot costs the same as two forge ahead books...)
Then, if you can get enough machine parts to make a wrench (somewhere around 6?), then you can use the wrench to take apart cars - this will get you a lot more machine parts. You'll need something like 20 for the workbench.
