Iron Bars (placemenet)
I haven't played 7D2D for four years and have forgotten a few things. I'm having trouble placing iron bars flat to use as a walkway around the perimeter of my base at roof level. When selected, the iron bars (by default) are set up to be used as a wall—with four directional options by pressing the left mouse key.

What is the command to change the direction of placement for iron bars to be used as a walkway? I've tried the shift key, the control key, and the Alt key. None of them work. Thanks, in advance, for your assistance!

Keep R pressed and select advanced rotation from radial menu.

I wouldn't use Iron, just make steel or concrete, iron is worse than cobble stone. use the shape menu to pick bars in the construction tab.

Thanks for responding; unfortunately, when I hold down the "R" button nothing happens. FYI, I'm in playing in Alpha 19.6 if that matters. The problem may also be that I have RE-MAPPED most of my keys. Could you please provide the actual name of the command for the "R" button so I can find the command in the user interface. I tried to find it, but the ones I tried didn't work.

Thanks!

I'm using the iron bars for a platform, not a wall...

It should be the key you have mapped for Reload.

I never said you said you were, my advice stands, I wouldn't use iron for anything because it's a waste of supplies when steel is strongest and floor, roof, platform, dock, wall or porch, I still would use at least cobble stone because it's stronger.

I can't use the materials that you're suggesting: The platform is being placed at the roof level— where my base is. The iron bars hang off the roof so I can stand on them to protect my base when zeds attack. The platform needs to be made from iron bars since I can shoot through them—I can't do that with the materials that you're suggesting.

Thanks for the information though...

Thanks Seven; that did the trick... Much appreciated!

There's plenty of other blocks/shapes that serve the exact same purpose, BUT as seven said, are much stronger, and you can choose how far to upgrade them. (from pickuppable wood 'frames'>wood>cobble>concrete>steel)

You're welcome.

I agree with the idea that "Iron Bars" are not the best choice, but something that may not be clear from the other comments is that building has changed a lot in 4 years. You don't have to craft iron bars to get the shape you want. You can craft "Building Blocks" from wood. These look like OSB wood blocks. You can place them and pick them back up. And the big change, if you hold down the reload button for the radial menu, one of the options is Shapes. That gives you access to over 2000 shapes for the block, including the bars.

I would suggest making your walkway out of the OSB bars and then upgrade them (right click with stone axe/hammer). Early hordes just upgrading them to wood should be fine. As you get access to better materials you can further upgrade them to cobblestone, then concrete and finally steel. You also get XP from each upgrade step.

Edit: OOPS. Sorry, forgot the part where you said you're playing 19.6 and yes that matters a lot. All those shapes came later. Now I'm trying to recall what building was like in A19. It's been a while.

Thanks for the updated information (to everyone). I wasn't aware of all of the changes regarding shapes and materials. I'll have to play around with it in creative mode to see what my new options are.

The last Alpha I played was A18 four years ago, so now I'm trying all of the Alphas I missed—in chronological order. I'm sure I'll have more adjustments to make again in A20 & A21, before I give 1.0 a try.

Thanks again for everyones' help!

Ah, I also totally missed you saying you were on 19.6. Sorry about that. It all makes sense now. :)
