So you killed all the zombies.
The set number will increase and you will be fighting till 4am soon enough.
Horde night every night is the easiest way to test this the day 1 horde is usually 8-20 zombies single player.
(but it was possible to do in A18 also)
It's all about the game stage. Also, if a new player were to log in it seems that would cut the hordes short for others as well but I think that was a bug in a18.
If you WANT to fight more zombies for exp just exit the game to the main menu and load it back once they stop spawning. This resets the horde and the zombies spawn again. I frequently do this if my base is still largely intact to gain a few more levels.
It has been possible to totally wipe hordes, at least early game ones, since at least A16.
One strategy we have used for years is once the zombies stop, exit and reenter the game, the blood moon zombie count resets to zero and they start pouring in again. :)
Yeah, I learned this by accidentally restarting horde in my main base - RIP :)
