if i have the sides of the building made of bars will crops grow or do they need an overhead light source

They do need light from above, sunlight to be exact, but there are rules about how this works and how much of a roof you can get away with.
It'll largely follow the same rules for building a farm underground.

The exception to this are mushrooms, which neither care about where you put them (I just cover one of my walls in them) or any level of light.

Light doesn't need to be overhead, at least not in alpha 20, and I don't think things have changed. Here's a post with an experiment I did. The ceiling was solid.

If you have a window you get a triangle shaped growth pattern. You can see this in the screenshot below. That shot has a 1 wide by 3 high window, but the maximum depth of 5 is achieved with just a 1x1 window at eye height (one block up from the ground). So, you could have a 9x11 room with a 1 block window centered on each side and have 99 growable plots.

I believe bars would be the same. Just a few windows is all you need.

I had an indoor farm with only windows in the walls and roof closed and worked.
