Report a translation problem
There is that exception. There's two different animations when using the wrench. One... where you are swinging and smashing something. Two... where you are turning it as if removing a bolt. If the first use of a wrench on an item gives you the swing animation... stop. Don't bother putting wear an tear on your wrench cuz another tool will do it as well (or better) and give you the same yields. But, you should check everything till you know which items the wrench gives you the second animation. Cuz, if it's giving the second animation (removing a bolt) then it means you can get additional materials from the object that other tools will not give. Guess I should have mentioned that to begin with. So, THX @Oktokolo for bringing that up.
Edit: Also... Ratchet works same as wrench.
