Actually you can be self sufficient. Fill a bucket with water and you can make a little puddle at your base that provides water.
If you absolutely hate the trader , there are a few POI's that have a dew collecter in it, not sure if using a landclaim block will let you remove it intact. You can also find the mod that lets you drink dirty water but that is a big gamble early game to find. The devs really want players to use the trader this alpha and if you hate traders you can still avoid them for the entire rest of the game right after you buy those filters. It sounds like you are mid or possibly approaching end game if you want to eliminate that bottleneck just build 10 to 20 of those dew collectors and your need for water will disappear very quickly.
Sure, collecting water is part of the survival experience and needs to be an achievement in itself. It's simply a bit too expensive in materials, especially compared to the forge.
Yeah I play with my kids, some are on the younger side and like to just hang out in the game to be included. So on a multiplayer with 4 people and we do the 2 hour game days to try to let the ones that are able to do work have enough time to do things. Water is the biggest challenge since we would need at lest 8 dew collectors just to be stable right off the back.
This has completely changed the focus of the game to just scramble to get water instead of being able to focus on the other aspects of the early game that where fun for us. We tried multiple angles to get it back to where we can focus on the core of the game but for us this update has made it not fun to play anymore. This is very sad since me and the kids use to have a lot of fun playing this game.
Not to be preachy, but it's a bit off to think this is a good way to interact with your children.
Then yesterday I found the holy grail. The helmet filter, so I now need my dew collectors even less than I did.
I know, I know. This sounds like another smug old player defending da Pimps at any cost. But thats not really the case. First play through, I panicked a little and focused dew collectors because.......well just look at the hullaballoo about them in this forum "water is broken" etc etc. So I went with the crowd and made dew collectors my priority. Then I realised that by looting lots of POIs (which is what I do anyway) I was finding lots of water and constantly forgetting to check the dew collectors.
So I decided to not worry about water. Yeh I agree the first 3 or 4 days can be hard if you are unlucky. But tbh thats always been the game. First few days you have nothing and need everything. By the end of the first week, you kinda have a better idea of what to prioritise. By end of week 2 you have a functional base and are strarting to think about chem stations, mini bikes or even motor bikes.
From that point on it's pretty much the same game as it always was.
I have kids too. If they are all at very different skill/ability level then maybe you should consider using creative mode in your game. press f1 key, type cm into console. Then in game press the U key and you can access whatever you need. I know some consider it to be cheating but it'd be a quick and easy way to get you and yor nippers through the first few days. You could just grab a couple of free dew collectors. Or. If it was my kids I'd give them a box full of essentials day 1 (water, armour, food and a couple of weapons). You could even role play it into the game ie "hey kids look I found a survival box by this tree" Then you and any older kids can play the harder version where you have to actually work for your food, armour, weapons etc and the littluns can be part of the game, but without the grind at the start.
Edit: Or give the younguns a helmet and water filter each so they can just drink from swimming pools, rivers, lakes and any other water sources.
Its what a good parent would do anyway. Make sure the youngest children are looked after.
Lol your kids are your problem.
