For "vehicle magazines" its the "Grease Monkey" perk in the Intelligence tree.
The higher the perk, the more vehicle books you find.
I actually tested it, played 5 days with putting all my points into Grease Monkey and 5 days without.
37 magazines found with the perk , 14 without.
So it definitely has a impact.
i just did a dive on the loot table. Lockpicks increase workstations but not the others that are in advanced Engineering
"Books are worse than we thought" discussion i posted more info
Some things I never ever want like rifle and fists mags I get them constantly. The most rare that I DO want, bow mags are extremely rare even with A point into bows.
You definitely find more with only 1-2 points already.
But more seems to increase it.
I made a pistol build and but a lot of points into agility and full points into pistols.
And i maxed out the pistol crafting perk by day 8 or so with 100 magazines.
Thats how many i found.
With verhicles i usually only put 1-2 points into grease monkey, thats enough to find enough vehicle books to have the motorbike by day 10 or so.
Which is my primary vehicle, not really interested in the 4x4 or the copter.
You also may find the vehicles simply for sale if your trader level is high enough.
Meaning high "Daring Adventurer" your own level and quests done for that trader.
Had the 4x4 available by day 12 or so to buy for 80k dukes.
Working stiff/bob for workstations, tools, sledge
Mo-power/bob crates for vehicles, robo, electrical, traps
Pills/Jenn for med/knuckles
shamway for food/med (THIS IS WHY YOU GET SO MANY Food mags! sham are super common!)
Shotgun/Hugh non-bow guns and explosives
Savage country for bow/spear/blade/club/armor (joel for armor, hugh for the rest)
I think the conclusion is the following. The magazine system is not balanced yet. The most optimal would be the first 10 days to upload only the intelligence branch and the greasy monkey perks. In this way you will only find the magazine you are looking for. it is unfair to invest so much so that just on day 10 you can buy the vehicle in the store. Maybe just putting on creative mode and grabbing the magazines is better. note that the perks are already reversed. You are all early and midgame playing with perks that do not contribute anything to survival, and do not allow you to create vehicles either.
assume each book has a weight of 10
230 base weight.
EACH perk point you put in gives you +20% (IE +2 weight).
i just posted the info on crates above.
Look at Mo-Power, Assume you have grease monkey 5 for x2 weight on Vehicles.
when you open a Mo-power crate (or vehicle) natural weight would be 40.
+10 from perks for 50.
your chance of getting vehicle books went from 1/4 to 2/5
IE went from 25% to 40%
with only 2 points it goes to 14 of 42 weight. 1/3 or 33.33%
But if you look at "all books" +10 is nothing really.
230->240 base weight going from 1/23 chance to 20/240
IE ~4.3% increased to ~8.3%
Sounds amazing right? nearly doubled your chances to get that one right?
NO
now assume you have 1 melee and 1 ranged weapon maxed out as well. so +20 more weight.
you vehicles are now 20/260 or ~7.7%
i suggest fully avoiding Advanced Engineering because it basically boosts 4 things that are pretty much all in the same drop table for their crates.
