The only other option is to drink directly from water sources. Have nothing equipped in you hands, look down at the water and press E. You will drink from the water. There is a chance you will get dysentery from it though till you get the water filter helmet mod.
Water affects stamina regen while food affects max stamina so being dehydrated can get you killed pretty easily early on
It doesnt have to be in a well, you could just pour it on the ground, but you could make something that looks nice.
So all you really need is a steady supply of food to counter act the HP damage. Heck just save the boiled water for making corn on the cob.
You can get a couple of ways
Clean Water:
Trader bought
Vendormachine bought
Quest reward
Cooking murky water in campfire with cooking pot
Dew Collector - 3 bottles per 24 game hours
Murky water:
Toilets
Sinks
Trash bags
Random containers
Can be drank without filer but suffer -5 health and chance of getting a runny ass
With filer is no negative
You can drink from a river/pool/bofy of water by pressing E without holding anythin in your hands
Without filter you'll suffer -5 health each drink and chance of getting a runny ass
With filter - no negatives
Every time you get it, it adds 30% to your dysentery, which maxes out at 100% (you won't die at 100%, you just can't get any more dysentery). There is no debuff from dysentery, besides using food/water slightly faster (I think points in Iron Gut counter this effect, but the numbers are all small so it's hard to test). Dysentery heals itself quickly (about 1% every 25-30 seconds real-time). If dysentery makes you thirsty, just drink more water, if it makes you hungry, just eat more (you'd want to heal the drink-damage anyways). You can use meds for the damage too (pain killer heals 80-water's worth of damage, but consumes 40. First-aid bandage heals 60 water's worth of damage). If you actually get down to zero food or water, then you don't die, you just slowly lose HP (I think it's something like 30 real-minutes to die). If you have zero water (zero stamina regen) then you're still allowed to do quite a lot (open containers, sneak, jump up, use ranged weapons (even bows); just no sprinting or hand use). If you've put a point or two into the Healing perk, then feel free to eat Sham Sandwiches (the 5 damage is recovered by the perk much faster than the 15 Food is used up).
im pretty sure you got empty containers after drinking. i think you could even drink from empty cans which dropped after eating canned food. But they must have patched it out. actually restarted thing to do.
