Manually create water source?

If you build a pit out of stone or cement block does it fill water when it rains?
I tried digging a underground tunnel from the ocean but water doesn't seem to fill all spaces below the water surface, and digging a canal is too much work.
What are some ways you can create water source?

Water won't do any of that. It's janky in 7D2D currently. But, you can make an "infinite" water source by making a simple 2x2 "hot tub" one block high. Craft a bucket, fill the bucket, and pour it into the hot tub.

Keep the bucket in a chest next to the hot tub. When you need to fill jars it will leave a little water in the hot tub. Pick it up with the bucket and pour it down again. It fills the hot tub, and voila, infinite source.

You can fill a whole stack IIRC. You just can't double-dip or you'll dry up the source.
