AI - Horde/General
In regard to AI functions of zombies etc, do they try to find the best path to you? i.e jump up stairs/ladders or do they just congregate at your general/rough position?

Just wondered as I'm considering creating two bases, one for horde and one for a base of operations.

Yes, the zombies try to find the best path to you and you can use this as way to get them to go where you want. What you think is a good path and what they think is not always the same though, and they will just start beating on walls and things if they can't find a good one. For this reason, separate bases are a good idea especially as a new player. If they start tearing down your base they can also destroy any workbenches or stores of loot and supplies.

Thanks for that. I assume then only trial and error will determine a good path.

I plan on building a open-plan staircase and an elevated platform (no pillars, just one structure). I have a regular base already (fortified the hell out the farm near Diersvill) so this "base" would only be used for horde night.

They do follow a certain series of behaviors that you can utilize for tactical advantage and your base sounds perfect for this. First, they will try to reach YOUR level. For this reason, elevating your horde base is a very good idea. After that, they will find the path of least resistance. Your stairway sound perfect. They will climb ladders as long as the path seems open to them. They will jump up one block stairs, which does tend to slow them down a great deal giving you time for those all important head shots.

The only reason they go into destructo mode and start beating on everything is when they are confused about the path, have been injured and are also confused about the path, and if they can't reach you. Zombies get a buff that amplifies their damage if more than one of them are hitting on the same blocks. So, the first horde night you spend in your new base, watch where they go, how they move, what they target, and this will help you make any changes that need making, let you see what their AI determines of you base, and, if all seems to fail, will tell you what doesn't work so your next design will be better.

Thanks for the feedback and advice. I plan on deploying wooden stakes and barbed wire fences to slow them down, about 4/5 blocks deep, on the platform. I'll be putting down wooden stairs and trying to make it as easily accessible to the horde as possible.

In terms of defence and surviving, I found a working robotic turret which I'll be using plus I have a blunderbuss, bow and melee weapons. I also have enough resources to make tin land mines (not sure where to place them though).

If you have any cobblestone it would be a good idea to reinforce your wood stairs, at least the first couple steps. Even with a clear path sometimes the zombies will start beating on those bottom steps and if they break those you lose the path. Then they'll beat on everything. If you haven't looted any cobblestone it is easy to make in your backpack with just clay and stones.

Blunderbuss? I guess you're playing on a previous alpha then.
