What's the normal time for a randomly generated world to generate?
Hi

I've had this game for some time, and have put over 200 hours into it some years ago and wanted to start again (well, old save doesn't work any more anyway lol)

I went in to try and generate a random world, and Holy Maloney, the time to wait was horrific!!

My PC is not terrible, albeit temporarily diminished in power 😬

I have a i9-10850k, 32gb ram, but the weak point is currently a temporary GPU, which is a GTX1070, as my RTX3080ti has had to be sent back for a replacement as it gave up the ghost last week (still under warranty obviously) 😳🙄

I understand that generating whole new worlds takes a bit of time, but I staryed a new game, went and cooked, ate my dinner, then decided to take a shower and get ready for work, and it was still not ready!!

I started the process at 1045pm, and it still wasn't ready at 1215am, so 90 minutes, and it was stuck on the same screen message for 1h 15m of that....Writing Map Data Complete... and wouldn't move on from that 😳

Is this normal??

I then tried the Pre-gen map 10k x 10k (roughly) and it popped up within a few minutes!!

What's the deal with the random generator? Should it be taking almost 2 hours? Is it because of my little old 1070 that it's taking so long and with the 3080ti it will be done in a matter of minutes??

1h 30m seems an incredibly long time to wait for a world to be generated, especially with a gpu which isn't the worst in the world, even in 2022!!

Cheers for any feedback!

I've got an i7-11800H, 32GB RAM, RTX 3080 and it took probably ~10 minutes to generate (I wasn't paying close attention)...the largest size random-gen map. It seems odd that it would be so dependent on the GPU, but who knows.

I don't mind the time it takes, but they really should have it set up so that it doesn't just start the world when it's done, because with these long generation times, I want to go off and do something else until it's ready.

Are you using an ssd for your game install drive? That is probably your limiting factor. Fyi it is about 1 to 2 minutes per 1k of map size. So a 6k map should take no longer than 12 minutes. I am doing 10k maps in roughly 6 minutes but I have a top of the line nvme drive. Only a 3060 gpu though.

Good point. I have two m.2 SSDs on this laptop.

15 Minutes for a 10k Map with default settings, on my old ass system that is nowhere near your specs, so I have no clue.
I'm running everything on SSD's though, all my drives in my PC are SSD's, can't ever go back to HDD's once you had a taste of the speed.

To be honest as well, the 10k process of generating the map ended with 7dtd minimizing RIGHT after the map was completely built, with my computer kicking me to the desktop to tell me that "Computer is out of Memory". There seems to be an insane memory leak, since all generated maps of 8k size are under 300 Megabytes in size, and 10k maps are under 500 megabytes in size.

So this doesn't add up, how the maps are tiny in size, but the game runs out of many dozen gigabytes of memory in seconds, when writing the map to the hard drive / SSD.

My guess is that as I said, a memory leak causes this. There used to be problems with other programs, like the famous "Firefox" memory leak that would simply leak as much memory as you had. If you had 128 Gigabytes of RAM, then the leak would consume 128 Gigabytes. You could have Octabytes, and still the leak would have found a way to make that full to the max.

A 10K map should take about 10 minutes, or less.... It sounds like you were finished. "map data complete" usually means it's done, and you can then start a new game selecting that map. (select the world name that the game assigned.)

From the main menu, create a new game, and on the game world selection cycle through the options (after Navezgane and "newrandom world" but before the 3 pregens) and I bet your RWG map will be available. Then give it a game name, set your options, and start. That is, assuming you've cleaned your data and aren't trying to start a new game while having ancient saves lingering in your directories because that could mess things up.

Hey

Only my boot drive is an SSD, and my others are a Barracuda 2tb internal HDD and a Seagate 4tb external HDD

I've never had issues with loading times before for any games using these drives, but this one was just terrible lol

I didn't name the world as I was only playing SP, but does that make a difference, and could it have caused the issue??

Yeah, that's annoying, as you get dumped in the world, and if you're away... 🤔 🙀

Ah, OK... I think I'll try to remove any old saves etc

What the quickest way to clean the data please?

I'm not really that computer literate, although putting the components together is no problem lol 😬

Pinned thread right at the top of the forum. Had to do this for Alpha 19's release as well.

WIPE ALL DATA FOR A20!
Kinda hard to miss...

Thanks for the pointer, and the little smidgen of sarcasm 😉

I missed it because I'm at work and didn't actually have the time to search for it (if it was here at all) just yet, and thought that one of the lovely forum users would be so kind as to help me with either a link (as you've done) or a simple explanation, if there was one!

What seems obvious to some people does not stand out so easily for others as we're not all alike!!

But thanks again for your help 😊

SSD is useless for 7DTD... If you play large game size installed as +30gb, yes here maybe you can but if not it's useless... But in fact that not do so much difference for game because it's the CPU & GPU who must do the best work... Speed for game, it's just a question about commercial to win money... If your CPU & GPU work very slow then add a SSD will not do a extraordinary change...

I don't have SSD & my PC i5-3330 3ghz 16gb GTX1060 6gb:
- 6k map take nearly 5mn
- 8k map take nearly 7mn
- 10k map take nearly 11mn
During the gen, I don't do nothing in back with the PC... & of course, more you set many option & high size for each option, that will take more time to gen...

But for Kutchek, well I think he must del the game & then re-install from zero...

Ok, as I have to restart with a new save game anyway, I may as well do it with a fresh install!

Thank you!!

Before you do all that... Just go and double check that your map didn't generate, it might be there since it did give you the completed message. You don't launch the new world from that screen. Start a new game, name your game, scroll through the "game world" arrows and see if your map is there - it will have a randomly generated name.

But if you haven't cleaned your data since having a previous alpha installed, then yeah start over. When you launch the game, there will be an option that says "show game launcher." Select tools, and then click "clean game data"

I'll make sure to do that!

I think I've still got a game save from Alpha 11 or A12 in there somewhere and have never cleaned it up, so I'll do that, and as I have to start a new game anyway, it won't really make too much of a difference!

Thanks again!

i7 8700k 32 gigs of 2666 ddr4 and a gtx 1070. 10k map takes me 9-11 minutes depending on Town/PoI density.

If I had to guess I'd say it's only using a single core for some unknown reason. Maybe lack of support for what sounds like a pretty uncommon CPU? If there is one thing I've learned from 30+ years of gaming it's new hardware generally sucks at running older games. (And yes this game has been in EA for so long it can be considered an older game at this point.)
