Character name display?

Before you blast me:
(1) Yes, I did do a search that returned over 1,600 "possible" results using several different keywords. After scanning 20+ pages, I burned out on the whole "search" thing.
(2) Yes, this is probably a noob question with an easy fix. I still need advice, please....
So, you can name your character. We'll say I named her "Stella". But when I'm playing (both single and multi) it shows me on the map as my STEAM username and not the name of the toon I'm playing at the time. I went to 'Options > Player Profile" and confirmed the desired named toon was selected. Still showing as me, Chanwando.
I know it's a little thing, but it matters to me. :-)

The profile you create is only for the appearance. The name you give that appearance has no bearing in game and will not be displayed. That name is just for your local listing. In game your name will always be your Steam Name but your appearance will be of the profile you selected.

That's disappointing, but I do appreciate the response and explanation so I can quit obsessing over trying to find some option that doesn't exist! Thank you!
