Q: Size for gyrocopter landing space (wing span)?
Suppose I wanted to land a gyrocopter through a vertical tunnel to an underground base.

How narrow (in blocks, please) could I make that tunnel?
(I am designing a helipad situation. I've never had a copter before).

Appreciated.

Let you know when I get there. ;)

A gyrocopter is not a helicopter. It requires forward momentum for takeoff.
I guess technically you can land it like a helicopter, but that just involves cutting power and dropping like a rock with little or no control. You'd need a pretty big hole to not bash it against the walls while "landing". Either an 8X8 or 10X10.

The gyro itself can fit in a 3X4X3 space, as the tips of the rotor have no collision and pass right through walls, which looks goofy. I would make it twice as wide even in a horizontal tunnel just to avoid that, but that's me. :lunar2019deadpanpig:

Vertical tunnel is a different story. It will climb a pretty steep angle once you are airborne but as mentioned above you will need at least a little runway to get you started and even then you won't achieve true VTOL. I would suggest an angled tunnel if possible. If it must be vertical it will need to be rather wide. Send pictures:7days:

Thank you VERY much, Trooper Bri and NoMan, great info :D

I was in fact fishing for information on how to design a base with space for 3 gyrocopters. I needed to know some game mechanics without spoiling the experience too much (my friends and I are eager to unlock it! We're 20 levels off, but need a new base now, that I'm designing)

We're not underground, but actually raised (think oil platform), which still boils down to limited space for landing without crashing into buildings or falling off.

I think I'd like to go for an elevated Take-off & Landing platform (in place of a helipad). How many blocks runway (either way) would be comfortable? Would metal catwalk be sturdy enough?

Instead of images, I'll record a video of our current base - we're transferring the theme anyways (and I'm quite proud of it).

Once you get the hang of the gyro, you can land it on a runway maybe 12 blocks long. You can even jump out of the gyro while it's still in the air a block or so high and it'll come to a dead stop. And you can take off from that same runway. The gyro may dip a little once you leave the runway, but you'll have enough speed to fly.
This is my current horde fighter base. The end of the runway intersects with my vehicle ramp. The runway itself is 25 or 30 blocks long (overkill), but I like big bases.
