If you want to keep them out I would say to build a wall and then make a way for you to get over the wall. Doors are best for blocking line-of-sight and decoration, not so much for keeping zombies out.
If you're worried about the door failing you could always give the turrets some extra protection. The arrow slits you can make will still let turrets shoot through them and can be upgraded all the way to steel.
Iron bars can also work, but don't last nearly as long.
Spikes (both sorts) can also be shot though though again they don't tend to live for long if the zombies want to go that way.
All that said, most of that protection is only if the zombies want to get to the other side of the traps as they won't normally attack them directly.
I do have iron bars behind the door for further protection. But they fall quickly as you said. Hmm, the wall behind the turrets is still dirt. maybe I should put some proper blocks there too. Didnt know about the arrow slit blocks working with turrets. Should try that too. Or a second layer of bars.
I have two blade traps covering the whole area of the pit. So Zs in front of the door will be dealt with as long as the blades are operational.
I always wondered about this!!!!
My doors are stronger then my walls, yet the zombies attack my doors instead of my walls. Never understood why.
I like it very much. It keeps the attacks nice and focused.
Thanks for the explanation.
