That can't be right, That means days survivied would be 1 even you died at day 100 and game stage doesn't drop that dramatically. That would also mean it is a permanant drop that can never be regained (until a max gamestage cap is reached).
Except that's exactly how it works. There are other factors, such as the GS having a minimum threshold (I think level x 2 ). Using your example, the initial GS would be calculated at your level + 100. Because you survived 100 days. When you die on day 100, it resets and Day 101 begins your new count, causing the GS to dip.
It's a known method of "gaming the system" to die before a particularly brutal horde is due to hit, because the drop in GS can alter the size and makeup of the horde (comparatively speaking)
edit: Other factors and variables can dramatically alter or even make the dip negligible too. Being level 100 on day 100 would have a GS of 200, but if you died, level x 2 is still 200. No change. Things like that.
According to the gamestage.xml, on each death 2 days is subtracted from the total days alive and then total days alive is also capped at your level,. If it is day 100 and you died once it doesn't seem to matter if you died on day 1 or day 100.
That said, seems like it makes GS drops and loss almost negligible to the point of "why even have a penalty". Unless someone goes out of their way to die repeatedly on purpose, I can't see how that is going to have much of an effect. Especially once we get to the point where Level alone is more than enough to be scoring the best loot
So, for the person who dies once, it's barely a penalty..
But for the person who dies a dozen times during natural gameplay(Read: Not abusing the system) it's a big boon; the difficulty will back off and allow them to get their feet under them again before it scales back up once more.
Though I'm grateful the game is forgiving in that it scales back the difficulty when you die. I recently got back into the game and died like 4 times over the first 4 days and worried it would screw me over later on.
EG: Not accurate numbers, but, Say it increases loot stage every 100 points; 100,200,300,400,500,600. That means anywhere from 1-99 you're in stage 0, anywhere from 100-199 you're in stage 1, etc.
So a single death, or even several, isn't likely to take you under a loot stage; And if you do get taken down a loot stage, you're likely to earn it back quickly since the amount of gamestage that can be lost is negligible in comparison to gamestage gained from character level.
And you'll never go down multiple loot stages due to the minimum gamestage enforced by character level; So even if you get knocked down one stage, you'll still be finding decent stuff to support yourself- Maybe not great stuff, but decent stuff; And stuff that is appropriate to the current gamestage.
And tbh, even in the case you go down a gamestage, you likely won't even notice unless you've memorized the gamestages required for each loot tier.
