Depends on the purpose. Gathering materials? Auger. Clearing space and dont care about the materials? Dynamite.

Just for clearing blocks... sure. Will make a big hole. Controlling collateral damage... Not so easy.

I'm not sure if it still works, but you used to be able to use wood frames to 'shape' the charge, as the dynamite will blast away one 'layer' of material per use, And it doesn't much care for the HP of that block unless it exceeds it's damage value like concrete.

So you can shape the charge by using cheap wooden frames to protect areas you don't want to get blasted.

Not for mining, since using dynamite blows up any resources. But it's good for finding resource deposits by quickly blasting through Rock. At least, it used to be. I haven't used it in a long time so it could have changed.
