The name (seed) you type in when creating a random gen map is converted into a numeric hash and then plugged into the map-making program. Using the same seed will create the same map over and over again, which is how people share them.
If you want to play on a map you've seen, (you have to make sure you are playing the same version of the game) just find out exactly what the seed was that they used and type it in. Be sure to include all caps and spaces. The game should generate the same map.
So this works for single player? So i need to be online? cuz SEED info is stored somehow?
Note - The map name you see is NOT the same as the seed.
Yes, this works for single-player. I do not play MP, so I cannot answer any questions about map handling and servers.
No, you do not need to be online for the map-gen to work.
The seed info is converted to the hash for use by the map-gen program, but is also saved in an info file when the map is created. You can find it on your machine here:
\Users\"YourMachine"\AppData\Roaming\7DaysToDie\GeneratedWorlds
In there you will find the folders for all the gen'd worlds. Open the folder and the file GenerationInfo.txt will tell you the seed you used to create the world.
To summarize: the seed is the initial state of the pseudorandom number generator. The map is generated procedurally from it. The same seed leads to the same map (as long as generation algorithm is not changed).
