Easy way to fill a giant hole with water with admin commands/modding?

On PC, doing a little bit of teraforming for my map on my server

Made a giant hole that i would like to fill with water, but the water physics are a bit buggy, and attempting to fill the whole by placing individual "blocks" of water seems to not work

Not averse to modding/xml editing

Are you playing on that map or is it a fresh one without saves on it? And are you using world editor to edit the map or regular save?

In that case I don't have any solution easier than placing water by hand.
There was a way in A17, but I don't know if it's gonna work here. You need to cover entire hole with ceiling from wood frames and fill the top with water. Once you remove wood frames entire hole will be full with water. You would need to support the ceiling since it's a big hole but it won't disrupt the surface of water once you remove them.
It was A17 thing, not sure if it's going to work.
