Tricks for better and more stable FPS?
I haven't played this game in years, tried it out again today and how is the optimization this bad for a game that's been in development for several years and looks the way it does...

Any fix for the optimization?

Without knowing anything about your system, issues, or expectations....

turn off all forms of blur (dof and motion)
shadow distance medium (or lower)
grass distance medium (or lower)
reflected shadows off

For better suggestions you might have to give us some information to work with. Also let us know what your actual expectations are. Some people post about "bad performance" and then after much back and forth we find out they expect 160fps at 4kHD on a 1050, and we have to bring them down to reality gently without making them angry.

Btw - we just went through this in another thread like 2 days ago. Many people with low end HW, even laptops, report playing this just fine. There's a high chance there's something on your system, like an outdated driver, that may be causing problems.

I'm higher end computer, I play on medium setting and it is fine with stable 40 fps. Anything higher it lags tho, esp full texture.

Unbelievable. Why isn't postprocessing an option in the graphics settings? This made my FPS just sky rocket!
Your not on a higher end pc if your getting a steady 40 on medium, Just saying.. I get 148fps in Ultra thats High End & the game is still capable of dropping my frames to 20 when it feels like ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ with me lol...
Here are the problems I had in Alpha 18, and the solution that seemed to work for me. With the settings listed below, the game seems to work fine!


Having problems with frame rate drops in A18

I have to say, Alpha 18 has me a bit perplexed: When previous Alphas have dropped, I haven't had any problems adjusting my video settings for smooth game play. Unfortunately, in A18 I'm having frame rate drops as low as "20." They happen suddenly, and usually when I'm in my base. Then the frame rate goes right back up again. Sometimes it's short lived, other times it fluctuates for a while. My normal frame rate is usually between 60 - 80 FPS. I have, however, experienced it as high as 150 FPS in A18. This new range (20 - 150 FPS) seems a bit odd to me.

I have three bases on my map, one in each of the following regions: South, East, and North (all in-game POIs). I am using Pregen Map 2. When I experienced a frame rate drop in my South base, I reduced the size of my tree farm (in the desert) and it seemed to fix the problem. Now I'm having the same problem in my North base (in the forest biome). So, I reduced the size of my tree farm once again. Unfortunately, it did not work this time. Perhaps there are already too many trees in the area, and my tree farm is the straw that broke the camel's back. I have about 50 trees in my farm (I've had larger farms in the past). I haven't eliminated my tree farm yet, but that's my next test.

Has anybody found a solution to the frame rate drops in A18? I would appreciate any insight since I am at a loss! I have spoken to others who are experiencing the same issue.

Here are the specs for my computer, and my game settings:

A) I have 16GB RAM (1600 MHz), SSD, i7 (4790k) @ 4 GHz, GTX 970 video card (4 GB video RAM), 2k monitor, Window 8.1.

1) I put my resolution @ 1920x1080 (even if you have a 2k monitor, 2k setting will make it lag). I also use Full Screen.

2) Vsync: Off

3) Anti-Aliasing @ yes / Texture @ half / UMA @ middle / reflection quality @ off & reflected shadows @ no / shadows distance @ near / water quality @ low / water particles @ 50% / view distance @ medium / LOD distance @ 50% / grass distance @ near / motion blur off / SSAO @ off / ss reflections @ off / depth of field @ no / sun shafts @ no.

4) Texture Streaming: I've tried this both on and off; I see no difference. (Use off) [Used if your video card has less than 4GB of RAM]

5) Terrain Quality: I've tried this on both medium and high; I see no difference. (Use high)

6: Object Quality: I've tried this on both medium and high; I see no difference. (Use medium)

UPDATE: Well, I removed my tree farm in the forest biome and I haven't gotten any more FPS drops. So I guess the solution is to not have any tree farms, or keep them very small (maybe 20 or 30 trees)… And place the farm a fair distance from your base. I'm getting good FPS now.

There is a full Biome Redux on the Mods page that replaces all the trees & other things with decent Low poly replacements.. Tris on their trees are from 1k to 7k Tris on the Low poly versions are all optimized at under 1k but look almost the same... Sphereii did a Nice Mod that sets all your Textures back to that of 16.4 & that runs in the High hundreds on a medium end pc.... So there is things you can do...

As for answering the question of can you fix my frame rates, NO we cant cos when you consider the facts & those are, This game isnt optimized.. This game will drop your fps down to 20 just because of an overlay or this game will drop your fps down to 10 because of the red moon overlay the list is MASSIVE i could state things that drop or mess with frames all day long with this game.... Also consider the facts that in GFX options most dont make any difference & this is because nothing is optimised yet....
War3zuk, could you link this mod? When I google it I only get HDHQ Overhaul which as far as I know isnt fully compatible with A18.

It already IS an option in the graphics menu. Turn SSAO OFF and SSreflection OFF...same thing (except the color overlay that changes from GFXPP) and same performance increase.

These settings will help a18 run much easier without really hurting how it looks much at all. Resolution 720x1280 or similar (higher if your GPU can handle it)
TextureFilter MEDIUM
ReflectionQuality LOW
ShadowsDistance MIDDLE
Bloom OFF
DOF OFF
MotionBlur OFF
SSreflections OFF
SunShafts OFF
Occlusion OFF
TextureStreaming ON


If that's still not enough or if you're using an older or weaker CPU these can also help:
ViewDistance NEAR
TerrainQuality LOW
But the lower TerrainQuality will simplify how the ground looks...more like a16.


Assuming you don't use the built-in in-game voice chat, you should also try going into sound options and setting EnableVoiceChat off...click apply.
For some folks this boosts performance quite a lot, though I haven't seen any help from it personally. It shouldn't hurt anything.
