How to put wood bars horizontal on the edge of the roof?

I want to put wood bars on the edges of the roof so I can walk on them and shoot zombies from angle. But I cant position wood bars horizontal. When I use button "advanced" nothing happens. Any tips how to solve this?

!!! make sure you dont craft "wooden bars centered" !!!
hold R until you can select advanced rotation.
left click until it rotates how you want it.

You have to rotate it so that the bars are facing horizontally. Select "Advanced" and then left-click, it will go through the simple rotations first and then rotate its bottom for advanced positions. Make sure you're looking at the side of the house as you do this, so you can see the preview of what it would look like.

Once the bars are horizontal, then right-click to set it in place. Also, make sure the bars are physically touching the house. Do not have more than 1 row of bars going out from the house, and do not fill in the corners. Wood and iron bars have no horizontal support, they will fall immediately if you use a bar to support another bar.

You can shoot through normal wooden blocks (not upgraded obviously), think it still works for rebars too.
That's what I use at the start till I can make the iron bars. Just to save you making wood bars which you'll have to destroy.
