At about 2 or 3 weeks in you'll get a few runners.
But by then you should be burly enough to handle them.
Occasionally, as you are higher level and higher date progresses you will get feral sleepers.
This will slow any Feral down so you have an easier time hitting them.
I used to do this all of the time in A16 with Irradiated Ferals.
