Dedicated server where time doesn't move forward without people???
After having joined a few servers that people had posted they were looking for more players to be on, and then finding the servers 50-100+ days in, I started thinking.

Is it possible to have a dedicated server where time doesn't move forward unless someone is logged in on the server?

I know this might be impossible, and I tried doing a search for it, just didn't know how to search for it. I think it would be huge for people who sleep and work and don't want to miss a whole game week because they did so. One 24 hour real world period is at the least, 12 game days. Just spending 8 hours at work and another 8 hours between sleeping and commuting and you've already gone by a game week. So having a dedicated server for yourself and friends where time only moves forward if one of you, (or someone else), is on the server, you won't find yourself at week 20 horde night with just a stone axe, wooden club, and wood bow. Also, I could be horribly wrong about how game difficulty is. I think, (because I've never actually looked it up), that the difficulty is based on your level and zombie kill plus the day in game. If it's only based on a character's level and zombie kills, (which is starting to make more sense as I'm typing this), then a server that stops time if no one is logged on would mostly only make it so you don't miss quite so many blood moons. Heck, it just might be that people use time still flowing even when they aren't logged in to skip past blood moons without having to fight off zombies. I don't know. I think I'm sounding pretty dumb the more I type this, so just going to stop.

On an empty server time stops. If one single person is on, time moves on. How else should it work? If you want to have control of time and space and play with others, you need your own server and make sure noone connects while you're away. or host a game for you and your friends directly, if your machine can handle it.

Well, it would seem that dedicated servers don't work like this. The other night, I logged onto a server. I was the only one there. Working backwards from the time it was to the time the guy posted he was starting a new server, someone would have had to have been on the server up until the point I logged on. While it's not impossible, someone having been on the server for over 40 hours was not likely. A few hours later, I went back. And unless someone logged on when I logged off and then logged off just before I got back on, time moves forward on a dedicated server regardless of our interaction with it.

Hmm, maybe there's an option for that in the server config files, but if so, i think it's not very common and wouldn't make any sense imo. Servers that run for weeks or months would be in the thousands of days even though nobody 's on depending on day length. But i can be wrong. Maybe it's best to take this discussion over to the server section i f you want some smart people to answer this 😉

I know I'm not smart in this area. For all I know, both of us could be right and wrong at the same time. And I thought the server section was more for, "Hey, come join my server cause I'm bored of playing with myself."

All servers stop moving forward if no one is on them. Its not configuirable in any way. So either someone was logged on, or server owner modified time, day legnth, etc. But time did not tick down with no one on.

Does this include dedicated servers that are hosted by whatever site someone rents it from?

ALL servers, both dedicated and local. The game will not progress if no one is on.

Then I shall just chalk up my experience the other day to just some more weird ♥♥♥♥ that's been happening to me with this game that like no one else has ever had happen to them.

Maybe the psychiatrist wasn't lying when he told me I was special....

Most likely the guy turned on the server earlier then he said or he changed how fast the gametime moved. It's physically impossible for the server time to progress without people on it.
