Failed to read past end of stream (16.4)
So I'm getting this error that pops up in the debug menu (F1) when my singeplayer world starts to Initialize. I've sen some threads saying if you change your beta version in properties it will fix it, but I've tried that and no luck. Plus, those threads all seem to be referring to multiplayer servers.

Honestly, I'm on day 39. I've got a really nice base, fully fertilized farm, and steel smithing and chemistry perks. It took me IRL a month to get this far because I don't have a lot of free time. I just started seeing unique zombies like screamers and the game started to get really interesting.

If my save game is dead I'm done with this game until it's out of early access. Anyone have any suggestions or fixes?

Mods?

Custom recipes?

Running current version?

Validate game files through steam?

Understanding completely what you are going through but HIGHLY suggest going to the offical forums and reporting this issue. Provide the devs with your logs and anything else so they can recreate this issue. Only way it will get fixed is if devs can have it happen for them or they get logs that tell them what happened. The game is popping some kind of an error and sometimes those things can happen with certain hardware setups. I use to have that happen to be so far back I do not remember what it said. I figured it was fixed but perhaps not.

Anyhow if you do not know link to website is on Store page down right side just before reviews.

@Lerch Addams : No mods or anything like that. Pure Vanilla. Version is 16.4. Will validate and post again if that works.

Edit: Verifying in steam did nothing. Also tried reinstall, nothing.

I did a quick search for "Failed to read past end of stream " errors.

1 reference to corrupt player data (lets hope not!)
1 vague reference to a Unity problem.

1 Player solution was to validate (which you did).

Corrupt save games can happen if your rig abruptly loses power.
Did that happen?

You can try creating a new playthrough to test this out.
(you can have multiple saves so you won't be overwriting the one you care about)

Anyone else have any ideas to get Venom going again?

Lerch, there was one point where I had quit out of my game, and was quiting to desktop but the game stopped responding. I was on my way out the door for something important so I had to do do a hard shutdown of my PC.

I admit this might be a possibility for corrupt data, but given the fact that I had exited my save already, I am extremely skeptical. I can't see how a script to quit to desktop failing/being interrupted would jeopardize a save file. I've been playing games for 16 years and have had to do hard shutdowns in similar scenarios before with no issue.

If this IS the case, I'd take it as the universe giving me the middle finger.

While it wont fix your error, you should really backup your saves with any long lasting game
Do it for every game you are investing time playing
It takes like 5 seconds and save you from being totally sol if anything goes wrong

Note that the 7D2D is autosaving one way or anoher from time to time
Ive crashed and i could load up a few game minutes before my crash
It means the game itself can overwrite, and potentially corrupt, your hard save

Now, i googled your error and it seems to be a version difference between client and server; so mostly MP related
No clue for SP
Perhaps you could change your game version, then redownload 16.4

Also, perhaps you can salvage the map or the character from your save

Otherwise, you learnt a lesson
Backup

The end of stream error indicates that the game couldn't load player data because the last save operation was interrupted and the player files basically didn't have an end.

Any storage device that loses power during a write operation can corrupt data.
(because it can't finish creating the file so the file is incomplete)

Sorry for your lost player data but it sounds like that hard shutdown was the cause.

I realize this is more of a band-aid than a solution, but you could start over and use the creative menu to give yourself the materials and gear you lost.

Should be able to get back up to speed fairly quickly.

@Lesh-9 I've considered that but in my personal experience once I start cheating in SP games it's hard for me to stop, so I avoid it all together. Plus, I can't remember for certain what kind of gear i had laying around, how mucn money i had for certain, etc. This line of logic may seem irrational and it may very well be, but that idea doesn't sit well for me for some reason. Thank you for the suggestion though.

Ripping my character profile and map actually sounds like a decent idea, as those may not have been the files corrupted in the save, or it may have only been one of the two. Anyone know some detailed instructions for this?

In your save ...AppData\Roaming\7DaysToDie\Saves\Random Gen\Seedname
Appdata is hidden by default, just in case....

in Player
The .ttp file is your character with inventory, there is even a BAK (backup), so, all is not lost as it is the most important
The .map file is what your character has explored on the current map

Hubcelldata and Region must be your whole map (not sure about it)

If you can salvage the ttp file or the backup one, you are good to go
Hobin Rood Apr 14, 2018 @ 12:37pm
Will look into that as soon as I can. Thank you very much.
