I had the same problem on a windows 7 PC and the only way I resolved it was by transferring the game folder over from another computer or forcing the download continuously until it finished.
Something corrupts the download as it's downloading and havn't figured out what the main cause is.
R.I.P 7 Days to Die dev team. You guys- OMG it just finished downloading while I was typing this. Hold on, lemme see what's up with it.
You need to try changing the render as it might help with the crashing. Are you on mac or windows? If on mac, set the launch option by right clicking 7 Days To Die in steam > Properties > Launch Options > -force-opengl. If on windows do the same thing and try both -force-opengl and -force-d3d11.
This game is still early alpha so you will want to at least meet the recommended specs (minimum specs is doable but there is currently a memory leak).

Wait hold on, is there a specific way I need to type this in the launch options? I'm using windows, and I opened properties and set the launch options to 'force-opengl' and I'm not sure if that's going to change anything. You need to be a little more specifiic.
We can't help you on this if you don't post your pc specs, lol.
