Don't open something if it is not clear.
When you do open something, press "R" and grab it. Don't linger.
Just taking everything is usually the better option than gazing into it and thinking about stuff. Which also means that it's wise to make sure you have 5 or so free slots in your inventory before opening an airdrop.
WHEN a lootable object vanishes (or is otherwise destroyed IE, chests), but still has loot in it, a bag is dropped on the ground at the location that can be picked up. But this bag only lasts about. Note that this doesn't apply for unlooted objects- Anything that is "Unopened" or whatever the text says will just vanish entirely.
So, You exited the interface and the object vanished, and because you were fighting off an enemy, you didnt see the bag which then itself vanished by the time you came back to get the loot.
As above, Dont loot till it's clear.
