I can't take a screenshot from within the game
I have to use an external program to take screenshots, and it's a pain in the butt. I had 30 screenshots in my screenshot folder, and I deleted them from within my screenshot manager. It still comes up with "Can't load screenshots"... Uhm, yeah, we deleted them!

When I try to take a screenshot from within the game, it makes the camera noise, but the little thumbnail of the screenshot doesn't appear, and it doesn't actually take the screenshot.

Any Ideas?

First, steam screenshots (F12) or in-game screenshots (F9)? Sound but no thumbnail sounds like game screenshot and those will be saved to a Screenshot folder in your save location. Steam's screenshot manager doesn't see those. For steam screenshots make sure you have steam overlay enabled. Those shots are saved where steam can find them.

Hmm... Not sure if your exactly correct about some of the things you said. Sorry, I could have done a better job explaining the problem too.

So I can better understand what you're saying:
If I'm in the game, and I press F9, where would the game save the screenshot?

If I'm in the game, and I press F12, a screenshot should be saved to:
/home/myusername/.local/share/Steam/userdata/1098157204/760/remote/251570/screenshots/

I've never ( in almost 3800 hours of playing 7d2d ) differentiated between taking a "Steam Screenshot", and taking an "in-game" screenshot. It could be that I've always used F12. I've always gotten the camera/shutter sound, and then a "thumbnail" of the picture appears in the lower right hand corner of the screen. This goes away, and a thumbnail and regular sized screenshot are saved to the above mentioned location.

Okay, I found where F9 (in-game) saves it's screenshots, and that seems to be working.
It saves them here:
/home/myusername/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/compatdata/251570/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/AppData/Roaming/7DaysToDie/Screenshots/

You threw me when you said "Sound but no thumbnail sounds like game screenshot", because when I press F9, it doesn't make any sound.

At any rate, thank you very much for the help, sometimes it just takes a simple suggestion to free up the way I'm thinking about the problem. This is definitely a Steam Overlay/Steam Screenshot Manager problem. And yeah, I have Steam Overlay turned on. And Steam takes screenshots in other games too.

But I think I might have another game that it doesn't work with...

Ah, linux or is that macos? I just assumed windows. I also change the default save location so that might change where in-game screenshots get stored. Anyway, on windows for in-game screenshots I don't get the steam shutter sound but there is clicky sound, no thumbnail preview though. I agree it's a steam problem. I've seen similar posts in various game forums where screenshots stop working for some reason but for just that game. I don't recall a fix. You're welcome.

Yeah, Linux. But it could basically be anything but Windows. Question: You said you changed the default location where in-game screenshots get stored. Where did you do that? Does 7d2d have an XML or .ini file with that setting? I haven't seen anyway to do that from within the game. Just out of curiosity, because as long as I know where the game puts them, I can take from there.

So, a very interesting back story to this. I've never had any problem with Steam's Screenshot Manager. And over the years I would occasionally move all, or some, of the screenshots from a game to a different folder - along with their associated thumbnails. Steam's Screenshot Manager never seemed to have an issue with this.

Somehow I was 'opted in' to use the Steam experimental branch client. I had no idea. All of a sudden I couldn't run 7d2d or Conan Exiles. I tried many many things before I realized that I was using the experimental client. After 'opting out' of that, and reinstalling the regular client, everything was working again. Except the screenshot manager for 7d2d. I don't think it's working for Conan Exiles either, but I'll have to go verify that.

You can set a save location with a launch parameter, UserDataFolder, either in the games General Properties tab or command line. This moves the whole save directory structure including saves, mods, generated worlds, screenshots, etc. You can also change it in serverconfig.xml but the launch parameter is more flexible, letting you have multiple modded games with one base exe install.

This topic covers it fairly well, talks about the mod location but it's the same thing. https://steamcommunity.com/app/251570/discussions/5/3414307711410954479/

It's written from a windows perspective but hopefully it will help. I've used linux for years, for everything except gaming, so don't know much about steam and linux.
