In addition to this, I was watching Kage88's video yesterday and he mentioned he was having very similar sounding issue on his game. He ended up spawning in a new forge to attempt to correct it (although it doesn't appear to be specific to a forge from my exp).
100% correct, on current B129 build, forges and camp fire timers flux a lot, and as a result, forges are eating resources you put into it, while camp fires simply won't start production.
There are a few work arounds for the forge, but it is so picky that it is very easy to lose all or most of your resources you try to smelt. You basically have to keep trying to get the forge to start correctly without timer glitches, and then walk away from it until it is done smelting everything.
If you go and check on progress, most likely the timer bugs out and you start losing all your resources once again.
Add in you can get to lvl 200 within a few in game days by simply harvesting grass with the hoe, as the return on grass are extremely high, (like 400-500+ per swing) which grants xp.
Similar issue when harvesting cloth from tents. The large resource returns are directly related to the amount of xp you gain.
