Performance tweaks for even the lowest-end hardware!

Hey guys!

Been doing a little fiddling today with settings, and have figured out how to boost performance ten-fold for people with low-end hardware (integrated chips/laptops especially).

I have a gaming rig that plays the game at max settings (besides tree density). Sometimes I don't have access to it when i'm not home and have to result to a laptop for my gaming needs.

Unfortunately, even at the lowest possible in-game settings, my laptop can only maintain 30fps (20 min). But guess what! There is a solution and you too can obtain 60 even on integrated chips!

How so do you ask? By lowering the LOD and Draw Distance to it's lowest possible setting through the in-game console! Until today, I thought you could only raise the LOD (200%) above it's maxed in-game settings. But with some testing you can run the game at 0% LOD, and 1 View Distance. Here's how!

Load a single player game (don't join a server, console commands while on someone elses MP server changes the servers settings). Hit the tilde key (brings up the console) and type these commands into said console.

sg OptionsViewDistance 1 (1-4 depending on your tastes)
sg OptionsLODDistance 0 (0-0.20 depending on your tastes)

Voila!

You're now able to run the game at a manageable framerate even on a toaster!

Hopefully one day TFP will give us the in-game option of changing these settings all the way down to the engines lowest functioning setting, and also allow us to use the highest possible setting without the game crashing (ala 15 view distance).

Remember. This is for people like me whom are on the go and can't afford an expensive gaming laptop. Especially if you have kids/friends who would like to play too.

This is an alpha. Alpha means we will see performance gains in the near future and the likely hood of these tweaks changing is high.

Hope this helped some of you with performance issues, as I know it worked for me.

I have a good CPU (i5-4590 ) but only 4GB or RAM and integrated graphics. Seems like between medium into low settings my average FPS remains around 15, regardless of what I try.

You do not have enough RAM. Integrated graphics use your RAM as Video RAM. The min specs require 4GB of RAM and a GPU with 512MB or RAM. So without looking into how much RAM is available after you subtract some for things running in the background, assuming it is 0 you are a little over a half a GB or RAM shy to meet the min requirements. No one with the min spec should be able to run this game well at all. You are below that bar. Considering at present there is a memory ♥♥♥♥ too, I am surprised you can play it at all. No easy fix for this unfortunately, only way to get it working better is to get a new PC.

I would average about 40 if I stood still but moving could drop to 15 area. The game itself there was using 4gb of ram... I have:
16gb ram
i7 4790k
hd 6790 1gb
It seems my limit is my gpu... I just wish the fps was more stable... It could be in the 100's if I looked up into the sky a bit... should focus on a set fps.
still upset that they havent changed shotgun reloading.

No easy fix for this unfortunately, only way to get it working better is to get a new PC.

I used to be able to play without any issues on my laptop, even lower CPU specs,but that was about a year ago.

Really not the right place for this lol.

1. Does it happen in you launch the game with anti cheat?
2. Find the process in your task manager and end it. Now launch it to see if it works this time.

This is purely a hardware issue, even running a mid range rig you will have to lower your settings almost across the board. I had this and many other issues on my old K53t Asus labtop 4gb ram 1.4ghz APU yadda yadda ect ect. That being said at this moment I have every setting on like various lighting and shadow effects and all other basic settings cranked to the max on my newish desktop rig. The hardware I am currently using is as follows; a true 8 core FX AMD series Black edition 4.5ghz CPU (not clocked atm), 32 GB DDR4 Corsair RAM Black (again not clocked atm), a FXF R290 ATI 4GB Black series video card (again also not clocked), three 2TB WD Sata HDs, a Asus MB TUF Bullet Proff series r2.0, a corsair 1000w platinum PSU with power select, also a corsair gaming 450D ATX black window case with 9 sandard 120mm fans with select speed on demand to keep it all nice and cool, and a 26' HD 2ms refresh rate Acer monitor... oh yes and a 8-15MB high speed cable line to boot for no lag is experienced on my end fps or not just internet speeds. In the end I have no noticeable fps drop, the game is gorgeous at this moment... my suggestion to anyone reading this is buy what I have or damn equivalent for less then 1000$ minus the monitor since that was a 400$ buy from 8 years ago on a older rig (still works dandy and hell prob much cheaper now, and on that note the hardware I currently have is almost a year old now). Other then that it is lower the basic settings and turn off the few special effects if you can't buy any upgrades at this time. Hope this helps somewhat, I guess.

No... This is purely a game code issue. I've been in your shoes and said the same thing your saying.I've been playing 7dtd since alpha 5 and have nearly 1000hrs in.Alpha 10.5 I can load up today and not have a single stutter but now my rig(gtx980ti and i7 @3.7ghz with 16gigs of memory) has horrible stutter and I have tried everything under the sun to fix it since they switched to Unity 5. Its not hardware for most.Its just game code bugs.7dtd is the only Unity 5 game that stutters for me and I have quite a few early access games.No other game I own has stutter of any kind like 7dtd. I know its easy to blame a persons rig but in reality the facts don't show that. Its the gamecode that needs more work and cleaning up. Pure and simple.btw I get about the same fps using a gtx980ti as I do mt gtx780.When it comes to fps and stutter,etc,I think and hope at some point they dig deep to get stuff fixed and cleaned up.It seems everybody has different performance and issues no matter what rig they have.Its all over the place

Could be the case, wouldn't be the first time... ah the torch lag days and the water way lag days of the past... good times heh. At any rate my specs seem to offset any bugs with the new U-5, nothing really popping up buggy wise... for now that is heh.

My iMac is only 2 years old and it lags like crazy. Its the same computer that South Park uses to make their show and it can't handle this simple game. Not very good programing thats for sure.

The age of your iMac, which btw is an OS that is not really known for gaming in the first place, is not all that relevant. You can buy a brand new PC today and it still have crappy parts. The age doesn't matter - the specs do. Playing games and animating are two different work loads.

Also, "simple" game? It's a open-world voxel game. There is nothing simple about it. Don't be fooled by it just because the graphics aren't stunning 4k HD resolution.
