Maybe you have it backwards.
Cause you know these sounds had to come from somewhere irl. Someone recorded a dog whimpering edited it a bit and violla.
Same as smacking a wrench on a radio tower support cable is where the Star Wars laser blaster sounds came from. (I am not joking)

he's not kidding, that's really where they got the sound from. And the reloading sound is partly a coin operated parking meter being cranked around.
