The game is also more challenging and rewarding when playing against strangers with claim decay enabled. You have to outsmart the other people in where to loot and also in making a really strong base that wont easily be broken into.
In sessions without this, I have seen kids with all their stuff laid out on the ground just outside of the trader, tons of deaths. It's just all in how you actually play it.
Though I agree this game doesn't scratch the itch of real progression or even balanced skill trees. There needs to be a story that requires you to travel and/or search to progress in it. Other games have not found a way to do this while also being sandbox. It would be two game modes. Or it would be an mmo, and that's not what they have in mind so.
Been saying this for quite some time now, ever since Trader quest became a thing.
Two ways to fix this I think.
1. One quest every 7 days..permanent time stamp so you can't just log in and reset the quest.
2. Trader rewards are dukes, ammo, food and water only. And trader gear is leveled like random loot levels.
I like option 1 the most. And if it were such I would probably stop griping all the time about how trader quest have changed the game... in a bad way for survivalist types like myself.
Sure current system is great for zombie-whack-a-mole-types, but I am pretty sure there is another game that should scratch that itch..'Left 4 something or another'
But too many people complained and it got nixed so food became meaningless...again.
I like the zines system now, though many hate it because of the spec path thingy that is all they have ever known and some vets prefer it as well. Also I can see the preference for multiplayers.
The zines system seems to me to be a wink at past randomness without admitting they over structured the game.
But even here they made the whole thing pointless with questing and trading..
Heck, in my first game I still fought the second horde with a stone spear and a lever action rifle, which was a very lucky find.
And getting power tools T5?
Getting auto shotty T6? At day 71 I never saw a T6 anything, barring some iron tools, some scrap armor and a few stone age stuff.
RNG is wild.
You know its unbalanced when you can craft an say wrench 2 from the perks heavily invested towards that due to skill mag drop rates and then you can buy lvl 5 impact hammers all over the place like its more common than the dirt.
