But it does not work with this alpha, what i did? went to a city and stormed poi 4, only caring to loot kitchens and end treasure room.
Why? to upgrade stage level fast and have supplies, with more difficulty more loot and more quality, aka more magazines, nice weapons and a lot of supplies, at the end im in a 2 weeks game, i didnt make the dew collector or a farm, i dont need them, 2 chests full of tea and food, and just opening the map to see where i put my base and start to make big things.
For the most part I enjoy the game, but there are some annoying issues here.
I don't mind taking a hit, even cheap shots but then to add a whole pack of debuffs you need meds to remove is taking the biscut, and half the time they dont make sense.
Dog bite your ankles, welcome to concussion land for a loooooong time, unless you got meds.
Zombie glitching through a hatch while crawling, head trauma land again.
Zombie randomly wafts its hands in the air, hope you have honey or meds to counter infection.
Think you checked your corners ? Hope you checked inside the walls.
Doors / hatch in front of you, nah you will get clipped through such flimsy excuses like physical barriers.
Hopped onto a tall haybale to get from the dog ? Dog eats bales dontcha know, hope you have honey handy.
RNG also messes you up a lot, I dont mind needing to search for magazines to get skills up, but when I go 3 levels into skullcrusher but only find the sticks mags all over the place.
It doesn't help when the game is being a complete d, as in first horde incoming and all you have is a tier 5 club and 10 pipe bombs, no guns offered as loot at all... I could only craft a pipe pistol with my stash as well.
The horde mechanics are also odd, seems the only type is a fighting room raised up with a narrow walkway for the z's to cross... make it on the ground, and the buggers start trying to smash and dig to you, even when a open 3x1 doorway is available, and when you go to see where they are the horde suddenly comes running.
Game has a lot of jank, but jank can be forgiven if the game didn't also have such heavy punishment early game... late game armour mitigates a lot.
This is a well thought-out perspective.
I've played for a while, and though not a kickstarter backer, I remember when you had to craft sticks for crossbows, and that bows weren't in the game yet.
I'm going to heavily agree that the injury system is a bit strange right now, because early game, if you get hit, you can get 4 status effects simultaneously, as you have no armor, but....
Late game, you'll have armor, and you'll rarely see status effects.
I'm not going to pretend to understand what types of zombies give what status effects. AFAIK, it's all random. Perhaps the armor you have determines what part of your body is injured now?
Deaths have little consequence now, since it no longer effects "wellness" or the max HP and Stamina that you have. Now it's just XP penalty. But... early game until about level 6, there is no XP penalty. So, TFP answer to no armor early game is to have the player just die in order to remove status effects. After that, you should have armor and rarely see injuries again, unless you facetank a 7th night horde.
ALWAYS expect zombies to fall through the ceiling, walls, or just suddenly teleport into existence. The rule that I use is just to plan out where you'll fall back to once advancing further into a POI. After zombies fall through walls, you have a few seconds to regroup as they ragdoll across the floor.
Always carry wood frames/building blocks. They always stay in hotbar #3 for me. You can scrap them back to wood if your inventory is 100% full, but as a rule of thumb, keep about 20 of them. When you see or hear a dog, just pillar up 3 blocks on the side of a wall, or drop two blocks in a doorway to buy time as you find a better position.
Zombies clipping through objects isn't anything new, but you can do the same to them if their head or arm sticks through a wall or door. What is new in this Alpha, are when zombies sometimes fall through the floor and seek to attack you while submerged in the floor, and once they swing, coming back up out again.
A while back, in A16.4 for sure, you'd find loot where you'd expect it. Guns were in gun stores (not wood clubs in gun safes, but actual guns in gun safes) Cops often carried pistols. Cheerleader zombies carried trophies. Businessmen carried cash. Now we sometimes get yellow bags that drop that have an assortment of random low-high quality loot. But all this could make it so that (as far as I understand things) a player could "complete the game faster", and that was undesirable. So now we're locked behind different "ages" in-game, which are tied to level/gamestage.
Instead of magazines, we used to have recipes via books. Then this was rolled into a system where crafting enough things got you better at crafting that thing (learn by doing). Then we had this "Fallout" style of character perks. And now we have this magazine augmented "Fallout" style of perks.
This isn't a comprehensive post, (just after midnight ramblings) but that's the idea.
Not going to pretend that I understand zombie pathing anymore. I just walk to the roof of the nearest POI, knock out the stairs/ladder, and put down some wood bar blocks so that I can fire though them. Please note that pipe bombs/molotovs need empty space to be thrown through. Don't blow yourself up thinking you can throw these through wood/iron bars just because everything else passes through them.
Early game is a huge grind, and is best spent visiting the trader to level up to avoid boredom.
If you want, you can add me and I'll help explain the game as it is now, or, if you want to see Alpha 16.4 and others, look at the previous Beta versions and select one from a few Alphas ago. Might blow your mind.
but i am an agility/perception stealth/bow/rifle/handgun build in my group.
the changes i hear about the game cause me anxiety, Exploding bolts are basically my bread and butter on horde night. will i even be able to get the glue for them in this patch? i love the idea that doors can be shot through but does that matter when i hear that stealth often attracks the whole POI still? final room straight up spawning all the zombies that auto-aggro is likely going to kill me repeatedly.
should i even bother trying A21 when not in a group . . .
I play this game everytime a new version comes out. I play the vanilla for like a day ... realize what is wrong with it and then i just mod it.
Things I have already modded - drinking jars back, farming back to pre-A20 (where you do not destroy them when you punch), recipes unlocked, beginning quests removed but you still get skill points, increased skill points per level, increased spawns by like 10x, harder healing, more recipes (50 scrap iron = cooking pot) and brought back gore blocks ... does anyone even remember gore blocks?
The game has become a search for more grinding loot delivering the dopamine kick to console kids - it used to be about getting mobbed by zombies and them ripping your base apart.
vanilla has been trash for years. i bought this game in 2014.
Not if you take quests from a trader in the wilderness. They spawn outside of cities now occasionally, which is nice.
First off, there's likely a trader (or survivors) in that area. Let them deal with the problem.
Second, there's plenty of Zombies and buildings within a stone's throw.
EDIT: And don't get me started on "supplies" buried in a LOCKED BOX UNDERNEATH A HIGHWAY.
If your on a solo world and your mission offers are all hella far you can try resetting the missions. Just quit out of your game and then reload. On game start the missions will be reset with a new list. You can use this to cycle the mission list to hopefully find stuff that is closer to you
