How many shots does it take to kill a deer or pig?
How many shots does it take to kill a deer or pig?

Well... In reality it takes one. One well placed shot.

In the game it might take a full clip or multiple rounds loaded manually. Why?

I grew up on our familys ranch in Northern California where we did our own butchering of cows and pigs each year and I guarantee you that it only took one shot with my Uncles rifle to the face of the pig and or cow to bring it down. Only on rare occasions would it take 2 shots.

Yet in 7D it might take an entire clip of a 9mm pistol, or take many many shots with the hunting rifle and I'm wondering why they've made it take so many.

I've done the whole ready... steady... aim... fire and hit the stag in the head and yet the stag goes bouncing away and I've then got to go chase it down wait for it to simmer down and do it all over again until I fill it's brain with lead. Or I could take out the trusty 9mm pistol and just shoot the pig in it's gut for a clip or two worth of ammo until it's dead.

I think it's needs an overhaul of this particular game mechanic before they finish up the game.

Kill an animal with one arrow. Be a man.

I agree with the OP, they need to work on that.

I get the feeling that they have such high hp, to avoid being killed by the zombies easily.

Takes 1 shot with a shotgun to kill a deer, unless your at a distance. Also I would never take a 9mm. on a pig hunt, you've got to be joking right? Im assuming those are wild pigs in the game even though they look like Charlets web pigs.

Well on the ranch they mostly used bigger caliber rifles to kill a hog but it wasn't unusual either to see my Uncle take a 22 rifle and one shot a hog with a well placed bullet to it's brain cavity. Although from memory and it's been some 30 years now, from what I remember those few times that it took more than one shot was usually due to him using the 22 rifle. But most times it took the hog down in one shot.

I thought they might be wild pigs as well but the times that my uncle would shoot the pigs in the barnyard with the 22 and require a 2nd shot usually had the pig charging at any person in the immediate vicinity, something I'd expect wild pigs to do as well but instead they just bounce around and eventually wander off.

As I said, this whole mechanic needs work before they call the game done IMHO.

Well regardless of reality This is a game and they changed somthing because it was not like that before and the targeting seems to be even worse with like axe and knives and such, also same with the trees It takes alot more hits to take one down now.

LOL, I'm still digging the two dirt blocks at the base of trees to knock them down, I'd rather do that then wear out my good chopping axe.

you shot them in the face? seems kind of cruel. On my best friends farm growing up we of course used a kill stick (A short custom made pipe that holds a single High Caliber round, with a simple buton on the top for a striker). And this was used on the soft spots of the top of the skull. I think shooting them in the face is jsut morbid / creepy after doing it this way.

Agree with the OP on this one a bit. Also had some side ideas........Plant Fibers + Wood Spikes + Wood Sticks + Corn/Meal = Baited Deer Trap. Plant Fibers + Stick = Rabbit Snare.....If we can put a shotgun together from scratch, we should be able to hunt/trap game (or any zeds dumb enough to wander into it) and possibly skinning/tanning racks for skins/leather? Also....Salt....preserving meats (not to mention human life as it is seriously needed) and/or jerky?

I'm not sure how many animals you would butcher each year or what year you were doing it, for us we only butchered about 3 steers and maybe 1 or 2 hogs each year and that was enough meat for the family on the ranch for the year (as far as meat goes), and it was back in about 1979 to 1983 or so. In any event, a well placed shot to the right spot on either of those animals isn't really cruel as it was almost always a one shot kill. Of course once in a while it went awry and he'd have to take a second shot. Can't ever recall it taking more than 2 shots though and that was really rare. But on those occasions where the shot went bad on the hogs many of us kids covered our ears as I seem to remember the scream was terrible from the hogs.

I one shot kill deer with the sniper rifle no problem.

1 shot if you get a headshot with a sniper rifle.
more with body shots.
Tanchyon Jan 17, 2014 @ 7:07am
So to wrap it up to cause death to a deer:
1. One shot high calibre to the head
2. Multiple shots high calibre to the body
3. Multiple shots anywhere with low calibre

Its not perfect but it isn't far off reality.

I punched a rabbit to death the squeaking in pain was so cute.:Hands:

Shotgun will do a deer in in one shot anywhere on the body. The pigs...yeah, then there's the bionic pigs with kevlar skin.

I agree with you. I've done a bit of hunting, mostly as a kid with my dad. (Now i prefer to kill things in video games, and if you've ever gutted a deer you would understand ;)

But anyways, kill zones would be cool. Head, chest (lungs) and heart shots would be cool. Heart and head shots should usually drop a deer, sometimes lung or heart shots the deer will run a bit before dropping. This would add a lot of realism.

Edit: I do believe they intend to add skills such as tracking and things like that. So this is probably something the Devs may plan on adding in, it's probably just not a priority at this point.
