Also don't use scrap metal walls/sidings, it's a waste of good resources. Just use the boarded windows (when you just start) made from plywood, they're relatively durable for something as common as plywood. Then switch to cobblestone.
It can be frustrating when you have a decent idea and soon as you get near end of it bam you have to figure round it.
Also yeah as ankh said metal scraps are more handy for other stuff esspecially making iron ingots. These can make shovels/pickaxes etc
