Heres how to play "LAN" with your mates (NO PAID SERVER REQUIRED)
So there is some funny issues but hopefully this will help some of you get playing!

So far i noticed that if i try to host a game as public ... i get told "Cannot connect to server"
i thought it might be the need for a paid server or to launch the server.bat but that doesnt seem to work for steam.

To play lan obviously you must have your router and lan ♥♥♥♥ setup (if you've lan'd with your mates b4 this will help you) google how to find your lan ip if you dont know how. Maybe someone can elaborate in the comments should people get stuck.

1) Find your computers LAN IP so not your Internet IP or the one the game tells you under multiplayer. Mine was something like 192.168.1.1 ...

2)Host a single player game set it to private set your conditions up and chuck a password on there just because you can like ... 123 or whatever simple.

3) Once your game has loaded up and your in the game world free and roaming your friends must select the multiplayer option!

4) Type in their IP address box YOUR LAN IP (in my case 192.168.1.1) leave the port as 25000 or whatever its set to default and select SAVE FAVOURITE now select to see only favourites (i believe its the button right next to it)

5) You should see the hosts IP address there connect to it type in your password i kept it simple like 123 and the game should say you have joined the world and it'll load up as normal ready to play!!

I do hope this helps some people the game is still rough but me and my friend played for 6 hours straight through this no hassels. From what ive been reading all day long this hasnt been the case for many others.

Good luck!

probably port forwarding, i remember i had issues even when a pc was on the same network. a bug that seems to be fixed. also dont try to connect through steam (like sending a invite) it wont work, gotta do everything direct.
and Spiff, thats sounds like port forwarding issue you need to setup on your router. got the same error when my friend was trying to let me connect to him but he didn't have access to his router. tried on my connection but my dsl sucks

thanks for your help, but it seems i already opened my ports like it is suggested (if i remember well they are the 25000 and 33000 both in UDP/TCP)...When you say gotta do everything direct you probably mean by using the connect to server list with the guest and then type the local IP of the host in ?

No need to waste time downloading/setting up Hamachi when its built into the game already. I must agree that there are port issues and your own network must be solid too.

We are playing via LAN on a daily basis no ports forwarded. One bug so far is having to Select the favourited game name then click refresh and then click START to join sometimes it can be hit and miss but once were in its all good.

Hopefully future will see join lan button and AUTOMATED server setup button added?

I'm running a server privately with no problems out of my house. Write your own batch file. Its way easier. Friends can connect NP as well as anonymous guests. make sure you have port range FORWARDING and not single forwarding.

First off, thank you very much for taking the time to post the instructions. I haven’t posted any tutorials, so I certainly don’t have room to gripe. This post is because you're not using the game menu terminology, it's a bit hard to figure out what you might be referring to.

When you say host a single player game, does this mean start a new game and choose SP (Single-player) Survival? There’s no option for privacy settings, so I would guess that I’m supposed to select MP (Multi-player) Survival instead.

When you say your friends are supposed to choose the Multiplayer options, does this mean click on the Connect to Server option on the main menu? I’m guessing it’s that, but because there’s a MP option in game creation, there could be some confusion.

I really do appreciate you taking the time to post, so please don’t take my comments as being snarky … just trying to clarify :-)

How do you get the option to host? I don't get those options? Never Mind, its under MP, duh!
