I have a non meme fort design that I have. Simple but effective. Trick is the entry way is recessed back so I can shoot across the doorway. Take advantage of barbed wire. If get enough money, maybe even put up an electric fence to help.
Also.. moat. A moat will save your life. Don't have any screenshots atm of my current base. Here is a flyby screenshot of an older, late game base. You don't need some meme base on posts with a balance wire to stop zombies. Just bottlenecks to allow you to concentrate fire and some stuff delay them. Early stage base is good with a simple wall and defensive barrier with a moat.
There is more design stuff in that base, but don't want to spoil the surprise.

Edit: To help understand what you can see, I have an outer wall with barriers at the entry way to slow them down getting in. Then the barbed wire followed by two layers of moat. Is an upper platform where turrets are, then the lower primary shooting level and repairing doors if needed.
The far side is a bit of roleplay. Is drawbridges so I can drive into the base. Tower in center is also just decorative.
lol... what ?
Otherwise, I usually just make a small opening on ground level (on whatever building I choose to occupy) and toss grenades and pipe bombs out the small window and watch zombie limbs go flying.
Zombies can crawl through one block space now so I have to put a small pole at the top of the opening that makes the enclosure smaller than one block space, and the zombies can't crawl in.
Then decorated house that has steel walls but painted
