Best way/depth to mine iron?
Hi guys.. im having a heck of time mining for iron. i dig and dig but i encounter hour and hour of almost exclusivly stone. Do the odds of iron increase as you go deeper? what the heck am i doing wrong?

Might want to just find an exposed cliff face with minerals showing and just mine that.

Also consider there are other ways depending on your level of need.

The boulders drop iron fragments, if you need some quick iron.

If you need a large supply...consider Iron Ore = 3 Iron Ingots...

Iron Scrap Piles from burned out cities = 1 iron ingot.

( They are all over and take 5 hits with a pickaxe or a few taps with an Auger, and you can get 200+ iron ingots in a game day )

*PS*

If this is Slyde from the "There is only Death Here" server, feel free to ask in game...sometimes the chat buffer goes screwy though and I miss messages.

Iron?? You can find iron now also on the surface, the plains biome is imo the best place to mine. Just search the high cliffs, you´ll find a iron vein in no time ;-)

thanks guys.. i had no idea you could get iron from the surface also.

and yes, mytheos, its me.

i used to play this game waaaay back before it was on steam, and then i left it for a while. its changes so much, its basically a different game now and im sometimes really lost.

so, is there no benefit to digging deeper? i was hoping the deeper i went, the better my chances of iron were, but it sounds like i was wasting my time :)

Used to be dependent on depth range...but doesnt seem to be the case now...I cant say if your chances dont improve as you go deeper...but I havent noticed if thats the case.

Since A10 you find iron and lead pretty easy and also near the surface, the only reason why you would dig deep is to find tungsten.
Slyde 28. Dez. 2014 um 8:23
ah really? how far should i dig for tungsen? i dont think ive found any yet.

what your saying seems to make sense.. ive dug a pretty deep hole now and the only iron i have found has been near the top.. i just thought that was odd

I also found iron and lead veins underground but why the work? :-)
I think tungsten is very deep, near bedrock, and it´s very rare we searched for weeks with augers just to find one single and not so big vein of it...

I usually just mine small hills. 8x8 square creating a sort of a spiral rock stair case down and before long (usuualy less than 8 layers down) tons of iron etc. I mine the surface rocks if in need iron before then very easy iron bits there.

OK thanks guys.. i had no idea about the ibeams all over the place being able to make iron... makes sense tho.. i just did a 10 minute run breaking them up and got more iron that i got all day digging yesterday...

thanks all!

Tungsten is near bedrock, still.

However the only use for it is, landclaim blocks...

Well I suppose you could try to build a wall out of it if you managed to find that much...
Slyde 28. Dez. 2014 um 10:22
can you only build land claim blocks from tungsten?
moTom 28. Dez. 2014 um 10:23
Right.

if you look at the files every 20blocks you will see stone and then all the ores have a prob. of showing up.

last update, the first iron i found while mining was 12 tiles deep
-it was a vein that did go 5 tiles deeper

I found a glitch for iron. all you need is 2 cans and stuff to make gunpowder. First make the gunpowder (up to 490) then don't remove it from the craft window, but put your 2 cans up to make 1 scrap metal. You'll get however much gunpowder you were making, plus that number plus1 scrap metal. Forge away. At 500 gunpowder you'll only get 1 scrap metal (but 2 stacks of 500 gunpowder)
