potatoes for speed of growth, yield and great travel food(baked potato). if you could only grow 1 crop, this is it.
and corn. slow growth but large yield and in combination with potatoes and water, makes a great wellness food(vegetable stew) that greatly fills the hunger and thirst bars.
honorable mention is Coffee for the stamina buff.

Is there a list of recipes somewhere? I have only been using baked potatoes. I didn't even know about stews!

Here's a list of the food items, I don't know of a list that also shows ingredients but it's simple to click on the foods that interest you to see what they take.

I start with a small farm with all of the food in it, potatoes grow fast and you can make several food items out of it with a small amount down say five plants of them you are set, than the corn is good for pie, all the stews, and cornbread, so at least five of them blue berries you need eggs to cook the pie so you don't need as many of them, coffee is good for working/running so about 5 of them and about 10 golden rod you will find if you drink the tea and eat homecooked food it is way easier to build wellness, which makes you able to run more and have more health so it is well worth the time to garden and cook every couple of days

I'm a firm believer in overkill. I've got a garden going with 64 of each Golden Rod, Coffee, Potato, and Corn.

Water is basically worthless, so easy to get its hardly even a task. A few stacks of sand and you are set forevor with water. Potatoes and corn in combination for Vegetable stew work well, and you can use them to make venison stew which is the best restorative item in the game for wellness.
