Wooden hatches for windows
Since the wooden hatches were introduced i was excited to now have the ability to cap off a ladder-well without having to build up an entrance room with a door on the roof or wherever the ladder ends but thats not the point of my post...

I was messing with them and of course seeing how they could be placed/rotated... I think a great use for them would be for windows. The ability to block projectiles when closed yet being able to open them to shoot out of with any weapon (crossbows can't fire through iron bars which is why i wanted an alternative) and hiding you from sight until you want to fire out. The hatches also serve to let in light during the day but close to help you hide at night...

When I tried to implement my plan it worked except that there is an orientation glitch that prohibits them from being placed in all available orientations to act as my windows unless placed on top of the block in the window gap and opened they don't block the gaps. There is also another part to the glitch that moves the hatch between two blocks instead of centered on one as any other block when placed but only when facing certain directions... I really hope this can be fixed so i can start playing around with them how i wanted...

Tell me what you guys think of my idea. I know this is part bug report too so I've mentioned it there as well but its the concept that i wanted to get across here.

Many other objects like doors and other things can be oriented in a similar way. Chests can be placed on walls like that with the same orientation issue. A buddy and I use them as emercengy caches around our base to hold a shotgun and some shells and a first aid kit for those heat map hordes that we accidentally summoned and don't have guns on hand.

They'll probably do something to 'fix' this. Hopefully soon.

As an old D&D DM :P I can state empathatically that players will ALWAYS think of things that you've never even considered - I'd say this is probably the case here. The devs probably never thought of using the hatches in this way so they never considered any possibility of orientation issues. Unless they plan on introducing a "window" alternative of some short (working shutters, for example) they'll probably work on a fix for this - just because it's creative and inventive if nothing else.

For me, i use hatches on my castle, like in the medieval time, when i am up on the wall and the zombie go under, i open the hatches and drop more block on her head, or i shoot her by there....

Thanks guys. Does anyone else think think this would be a useful change for the devs to implement?

Thats the first thing I tried to do with hatches, make windows.

Yep i tried it to, shame it didn't work. Would be nice if they did make it possible.

I think it's a great idea. Because glass is so fragile and lets out light, I never build windows. If I could build shutters to protect them then that would make windows more appealing.

I suspect they'll either (a) fix hatches to work on walls for windows or (b) make a shutter we can craft to serve the same purpose.

Yea, there's a ton of blocks with missing rotations. It's really frustrating at times, but I doubt it will ever actually be fixed since those of us who care are in the extreme minority.

Depends on how loud the minority is. Youll be surprised what one person can achieve if hes loud enough. Even small fish can make waves.

cool have to try this some time, ... still hatches are rather ugly kinda hope they put a recipe in home improvement book for more sturdy ones. wooden or not both them and the 'secure' wooden door dont inspire much confidenace.

...maybe they need a carpenter book as well later.

And a cooking book, and a breathing book to. You come into the world naked and helpless might as well be a dumb baby to boot.

Nice idea - not thought of it. I want to be able to put the spikes (logs or wooden) on to the side of a wall. I know you can rotate the wooden spikes to sit on a block and face out (2 of the 4 directions) but why not all 4, the log ones or even nails to create a "spike" hazard.
