Why do I have to spawn in a thong?
Whenever I play a game I view the character as an extension of myself. So when you force me, as a girl, to spawn in a thong and make the cotton “pants” I can craft by default mere leg wraps it greatly takes away from my gaming experience. I would not mind it so much if guys also spawned wearing a thong but they at least get shorts. Why can I not have shorts too? Or at least a booty short. In 9.3, when I spawned my main focus was on surviving. In 10 my main focus is on finding clothes because I don't want to run around with my ♥♥♥ hanging out in front of all my fellow guy players. Also, I like playing on a server that is level 4, so every time I die I have to worry about getting clothes again. I really don’t like that I have to spawn in a thong and do not have the ability to cover myself. It makes me feel like I am not a fellow player but just a piece of meat. Please give me the option to spawn with more than a thong on.

UPDATE: I can now easily craft pants out of plant fiber. I am happy. Keep up the good work devs! I really do love this game.

However, I do have to say I was surprised by how many people commenting exhibited an extreme lack of understanding, and at times even hatred for, women's issues.

Seeing underwear people running and jumping everywhere isn't immersive, remind me of mmorpg where noobie where jumping all around in underwear asking for gold, or whatever money the game use.

I don't mind underwear (even if i find those black thong ugly) but for immersion purposes, not every survivor could have been jumped on by zombie while wearing underwear.
It makes no sense at all to start the game in underwear. Make people start in basic stat-less clothing. If you insist on the importance of underwear in vanilla gameplay ... well add different underwear to the loot tables so people at least have a choice. Or make a slider at character creation with 2 or 3 different undies. Problem solved.

If you really insisted on the need to spawn in underwear you do not choose, makes no sense at all to pick THIS particular piece of clothing for women since it's "daily" worn by like 1% of women, make that 5% if it was for a "special" evening or so. ( strapless bras and thongs main purpose is to wear a form fitting dress with bare shoulders, mostly "formal dressed evening" wear )
So yeah, remove the men briefs and put them in leopard thongs, because it's clearly a "regular piece of men clothing" according to the same standards, right ? ;)

On a side note , the people who say they don"t care or this issue should be ignored amaze me. They fail to provide a single good reason why thongs should be in instead of more casual underwear. WHY is it SO important to you that it's not changed if you don't care in the first place ? There's basically NO reason at all for thongs except " T&As for horny male crowd". But then why not play Lollypop chainsaw or games like that, to satisfy those needs ? What's desperately so important in having female player in 7DTD wear thongs at spawning, that would absolutely ruin your gameplay experience if it was changed ? Guess what ? nothing. Or T&As, but then admit it instead of BSing about feminism or any kind of makeshift excuse.

7DTD is a game where you have to use wooden frames to pour concrete in, and then wait for it to dry. Every gameplay mechanism or element is trying to be related to its real life counterpart, = "serious" game. This has nothing to do with feminism or anything. Thongs instead of regular undies are like My Little Ponies instead of deers. I'm sure it would be funny and even amazing for some people, but it clearly belongs to mods, not to vanilla.

So first of all, I 100% agree with the above. Both ideas are excellent, people should start the game in more substantial clothing AND there should be some choices in regards to every type of clothing, even underwear.

This I only marginally agree with, however. I'll agree that it's not the most popular style of underwear I've seen, but of the women I know whose underwear I have some knowledge of, the percentage of those who wear thongs on a frequent basis is far greater than 1% or 5%. I'd put it closer to 30-40%. But of course my personal knowledge (or yours) is hardly an authoritative sample, so I tried to google "women's underwear sales statistics" and similar things -- I didn't find anything really informative. Do you have a source for any solid information on this?
By calling attention to sexism you yourself are being sexist as with racism which isnt here just another common mistake people make and dont realize =p cheers
You people are ridiculous! Have you not got anything better to do than whine about the specifics of what underpants someone spawns with on a video game.... its a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ video game...
I just want to see just how many comments we can get about pants :)

I agree they should be in tattered clothing. My reasoning is different and I think the same way about all survival games. Maybe I'm just over thinking it but it's not realistic for someone in a survival situtation to be running around in underwear or as in the case with Rust no clothes at all.

Oh I'm sure that most women own at least a thong or two, thats not the problem. Thing is, it's not a practical undie to wear at all. I'm a 35 y.o woman who likes pretty lingerie and I have drawers full of. I almost never wear thongs, except for those special form fitting dresses or skirts ( or some pants ). It's not hygienic, not comfortable. You only wear that for a special purpose, some clothes like i said, or to try to be "sexy" or something. It's like 5 inches stilettos, sure you might see a couple women walk with those in the morning, or at work. But most women will wear smaller heels, or flats. And frankly if you wanted to be sexy, there are things far more sexier than thongs. Hell i'm even sure on a daily basis there are more women wearing teddies than thongs. One could also say that since 2006 or so, thongs are totally "has-been" on a fashion level but that's another story since we don"t know in what year 7DTD takes place.

Imagine you go on some community forum and the people there ( mostly women ) are telling you that the standard or frequent male underwear is leopard thongs. You'll just tell them "nope sorry, not like that irl despite how much you'd love to ". And you wouldnt have to back it up with statistical evidence, you'd know that everyday people go for comfy undies, not sexy ones. ( especially uncomfortable ones ! )

There's no very precise backstory in 7DTD, characters are "average joes & janes" so you have to go with average underwear if you want things to be coherent and credible. Average woman underwear is not thongs. Thongs make it kinda look like a game for horny teens, and a lot of people have already expressed that it feels cheap, immature, and breaks immersion. It adds nothing, and takes away some of the ambiance the game is trying to set everywhere else.
It's already borderline with giant hornets for some people, but one could argue that hornets are interesting because it adds a flying enemy and thus has gameplay and tactical repercussions. Thongs though ? adds nothing, except annoyance/siliness for some, and T&As eyecandy for others. Both are not needed in vanilla, and can be covered by mods or options. Just like MLP for deers :)

@Stormageddon3 what about the issues men face hmm? Were just told to "man up" if we get abused sick hurt conscripted.

Edit Ahh let me not forget male cirsumcison.

If we're talking strictly about the theme and immersion of the game, then i'd have to agree that the choice of starting the player out in underwear seems odd in a survival game.

Again.

This is a placeholder to indicate to a new player that "hey, you need to find some clothing".

Does it seem a bit crude or unfinshed? Yes.
Because this is an unfinished game.

A better solution would be to start the player out in tatered shorts and a t-shirt.
Then display a text prompt stating "find some clothes" so new players understand their options.

Again.

TFP didn't convene a secret meeting in their underground lair and cackle about ways to offend people.

If they didn't care then they wouldn't have released a patch that added fiber pants to the recipe system a couple of days later.
Because most people think "Oh god, theres a zombie apocalypse happening! I need to strip down to my smallest undies!"

Either that or everyone you play as was having a shower and needed to escape ASAP... Yeah I kinda agree... I love the game but... maybe a more mature approach? :)
I try to operate on what i know, not what i suspect.

The problem that we're all laboring under here is that we really have no plot on which to base our opinions about this feature.

1. There was a nuclear exchange.
2. There was a viral outbreak.
3. Zombies happened.
4. We play as survivors.

5. You have no clothes. (?)

Since we don't have a plot, we don't really know how we got here in the first place.

Connecting #5 with #1-4 is going to be a logical stretch without a solid plot.

Fair enough, point taken, and apologies if it seemed like I was demanding statistical evidence; it was more a case of wondering if you knew something specific that I hadn't seen/found.
