Why I cant plant Potato Cell by Cell?
Everytime I try to plant it cell by cell, the previous plant I placed would go there.. It wasn't like that before.. I always plant it on fertile soil..

You have to till the soil in one direction only (e.g. by using the Gardening Hoe always towards the North) and plant the seeds in that same direction or you will lose the plant every even/odd cell.

You also have to leave an empty row between two tilled soil rows.

I build my gardens on roof tops, and find that you can plant potatoes, goldenrod, blueberries and coffee cell by cell as long as the fertile dirt remains fresh. Once it becomes overgrown, you need the how or just plant your corn and cotton there. Of course, you can grow your corn and cotton between the tilled rows too...

Overgrown? WHat does it look like? Green with grass? So the fertile/plantable one is the mud looking wet looking soil?

Exactly. When it's green, the potatoes won't grow, only corn and cotton.

i have had this same problem it's not the problem of grass . it's when you place a potato seed. if you place another seed in any square next to it the last one you placed vanishes. making growing potato's take a 9 block space. i have just stuck to corn at this point to maximize my farm space. it some times happens with coffee and blue berries but not always.

You can place a potato seed in ANY tilled block, and you don't have to plant entirely in one direction. What happens is that when you till any block, the blocks to the left and right of that block, given your current facing, turn back into untilled soil. So when you try to plant in that untilled block, it doesn't work. You cannot till every block in a grid, but you can till around corners, like this...

In this example, we want to a row going north that then turns east. Till the block just south of the north west corner by standing just south of that block. Then step forward and till the north west corner standing one block south of that. This will untill the block just east of the north west corner, but that's okay because it isn't tilled yet anyway. Then go two blocks just east of the north west corner block and till the block that was just ostensibly untilled and continue tilling easterly. Voila, you have tilled around a corner.

Fresh laid Fertile Soil ( Brown )

For MP RandomGen, you can just plant anything in brown fertile soil. ( 10.4b? or whatever is current )

You dont NEED water, or a hoe.

And you can plant potatoes in grid as close as possible and it works....

However farming is a little buggy...and every person you talk to tells you different based on SP/MP/Patch Version/Random Gen or Standard Map.

i assert that most people seeing problems with this are just working from an old game world file.

start a new world under b10.. start a new world when each new alpha build is released, imo.. it's just confusing for the devs to hear bug reports stemming from games created on old versions.

Not necessarily, I had some issues in one garden using the latest update on a fresh game, then tore down my farm and rebuilt it. Then everything seemed to plant next to each other in rows just fine.
