Start with designing one they fall into before you worry about how deep.
Sure...but that isnt "falling to their deaths".
another idea might be to put a woodframe overhang on your pit, and pull it out from under their feet, then pop it back in place for the next victim.
Maybe we dont know exactly....because there are issues with implementing something like that so we never got that far, here's why, and heres what works....
