Is it possible to play multiplayer with a friend and then play solo when that friend is offline?
Sorry if this has been asked before. Is it even possible? me and a friend play together but then when one is offline the person who didn't create the original game can not continue on that world.

There must be a way to allow progression to continue regardless of if the original person is online right?

What are we doing wrong?

Find a server you like or set one up, think thats the only ways

Problem is I like to limit it so only us two can play. If I set my own server up is that free and will that then always remain online even if I turn my computer off?

Only if you rent a server then, or if you have a spare computer thats online 24/7

I have setup a second PC in-home to run a 7DtD dedicated server, you can set max players in the serverconfig.xml (in the "7 Days to Die Dedicated Server" folder). You can also set it as private so that it won't show in the public server list and password protect it too, in that config file.

In the serveradmin.xml file (located where the server saves are set up) you can whitelist by steamID so that only you and your friend can access.

It would need to remain on for your friend to play on it. Also you'ld probably have to find out a little about port-forwarding your router (and find out your friend's IP address so as to limit it so that only your friend's IP address was forwarded through your router). Unless you are both playing on a LAN. (Then you would probably only need to allow your friend through the PC firewall).

Cheers guys, I am surprised there is no way to keep playing together and alone regardless but maybe it will come in final release? I see a "create room" feature, maybe that would somehow do it?

None of those options above are really viable unless my friend wants to do it lol, he does have servers on all the time I think so could work but it's not worth it just to play in the same world together lol. I guess if we want to do that we should go on a public ones. Are the ones listed in the game always there?
If you're the host of the server, then yes you can continue the save in single player. You just need to change the seed name to what the server was set to or just hit continue.

If you're a client joining someone elses server, then no you can't because the save files are saved and kept on the hosts computer. You would have to ask them to upload the save for you and download it. You would then drop it in your Documents > 7 Days To Die > Saves.

Don't you have to have a second steam account with the game purchased on it to do this? Or is there a stand alone executable we can run just a server on without another account? I was considering doing this myself, but have already bought 4 copies for my kids and I and sold my bro-in-law and one of his daughters on it too...I really don't wanna buy any more copies lol.

There is standalone dedicated server you can download under Tools portion of your library.

Install it and run the startdedicated.bat after editing the config, you don't need steam running to host a server this way.

This is the proper way of hosting a dedi server especially if you use a dedicated box for hosting, and it uses just the files needed for running one.

Also, the original game files also has a bat file to start the server and works without steam too, but it's still preferred to use the dedicated server under Tools.

The files will be updated and maintained for running a dedi server and eventually the dedicated server hosting files will be removed from the original base game files in the future.

You're welcome!

I myself didn't even know 7DTD had dedicated server files till recently, and must of only been introduced recently with A11.
