Query on mining "blocks"

It's been quite a while since i played and there's been a few updates since, but last time i played there was the ability to mine blocks out (forgive the reference) like Minecraft, now i've come back on i can't seem to mine a "block" out, i was wondering if this has been removed or if it's a bug or if there's a different way to remove blocks rather than the shapes that drop? eg i mine a hole before and a square shape was lift, i mine now and it's more of a diamond shape.

Any help, tips etc would be appreciated.

not quite sure what youre asking.
you say you cant mine a block out and then you say you mine it out but its a different shape.
the voxels in the game were smoothed out some time back to provide a more pleasing landscape instead of the ugly, minecraft like, blocky landscape.
i dont know what your issue is other than the fact that the item you mine is a different shape. it really makes no difference other than visually.

Sorry i hadn't worded it correctly, it was more or less the shapes, you pretty much answered what i was asking though Thank you. I wasn't sure if i was doing anything wrong that's all.

In earlier versions the voxels were cubes. When they did the terrain smoothing, they switched to diamond shaped voxels. You can simulate squaring off a tunnel by making it 1 block wider/taller.
