Do tunnels collapse if you dig too far horrizontally underground?

I know there is physics applied to the enviroment in this game but I was always unsure if it applies to underground tunnels. I'm always paranoid it'll just collaps underneath me making it a chore to get my items out after spawn. Dying outside is fine, dying underneath is a nightmare.

I've dug massive tunnels spanning hundreds of blocks and it has never collapsed on me.

digging through stone/rock in does not fall in also if they ever sort out stopping you restarting above ground and back to how it should be near or next to your bedroll you can pick up your bedroll and put it in the tunnel so you can restart in the tunnel, but at the moment due to the bug you die unground and it will put you back ontop

if there is at least 3 or 4 blocks of material above you, then it will not collapse
