I always play with respawn off. And even when I'm going from house to house in MP and get distracted, it's hard to remember which ones I've been to. It will be even more useful once there's more variety to the POI's.
The way I mark houses that I've searched is by leaving a cloth block (can't remember it's exact name) outside. You can stick it on the wall near the door, out of reach of any swinging zed. Quick and simple - and there's no end of cloth about, so no shortage of material to do it, either.
putting in your own artwork ... it would have to upload the "tag" file when you long in and store it so others could see it
or could just go with stock pics ...
